hello fellow tech gurus... I've read through much of the forum and came across the most informational posts on how to get your FN keys working and for this particular laptop at that Sony Vaio S460. There were descriptions of installing drivers in certain orders, as well as going to a third party site for the contrast portion. Unfortunately, that thread was closed....but i had a very important question:
I've recently switched from XP to Windows 7 completely bypassing Vista. I had to re-install all the drivers from Sony (i believe i have most of the important things working) however when it came to the FN buttons, those few keys took me longer than the whole process of changing windows. TO my surprise, many of the drivers adapted themselves from XP to WIndows 7. Anyways, after trying everything, i think I finally got MOST of the FN buttons working.. However, when it comes to the volume portion, it only allows me to control up to 1 bar.. So when I click FNF4 - the volume will go up but only to the max of 1 bar?????
WHAT WOULD MAKE IT DO THAT?? any advise?

I am also planning to upgrade my s460b to windows 7 but cannot find the compatible function key drivers. If anyone knows, please share.
thanks, -
Is there anyone that can help? I tried to install the drivers for the S660 and it made it worse, whereas before only the volume didn't work, now none of it works.. It also won't allow me to delete drivers.

BUMP? can anyone help?
-
Simple. The driver you're using wasn't made for W7 for that laptop. You can try one of the later Sony drivers compatible with W7, or try Vista drivers from here:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNS460&SelectOS=27
Outside of that, your S460 may or may not work right under W7 since I'm not sure Sony designed it with the idea that you'd be putting on a new OS two version on five years later. -
You could try the following...
-
All oem sony bloat/crapware has been omitted to the best of my knowledge.
I followed the previous poster's directions to a tee, still was not able to get any hotkeys or onscreen displays to work. The only noticeable change after the procedures are the installation of 2 system icons in the lower right of my screen that look like two grey 'locks": [scr lk off] and [num lk off], in addition to installing "Vaio Control Center" under my programs list(this program doesn't offer anything i didnt already had access to, screen resolution, touchpad speed, power settings, etc).
Any other suggestions? Please help. any other advice/input would be greatly appreciated. none of my function keys work and this is frustrating -
I have tried the step but the FN still dont work in my vaio s460, please help me..
I have installed a 32-bit version of windows 7 and installed the components in order -

I am using 98.12, where can I get the compatible issues? cause I looked into nvidia and it refers me to sony support but there is no vista graphic driver there.
help please.
thank you -
superbogel, what Nvidia GPU do you have? You can try the MS update 198.05 driver in my guide.
Don't install any codec packs. WMP 12 in Windows 7 plays, AVI, MPEG, and MP4 video out of the box. -
my sony vaio is vgn-s460 and it's in 98.12, where can I find your guide ? I have tried downloading 25X.X from nvidia and 198.05 from nvidia and it just pop up error saying that it's not compatible.
can you please help out coolguy..
thank you
btw I am using 32bit windows 7. -

I'm now also trying to make the fn keys work on my vgn-s460. However, I was stuck on step 5, should I use the 198 version or 257, the later one prompts that there is no compatible hardware found, etc. Any ideas?
Thanks! -
I'm still in the same boat. I installed the drivers as recommended, but the Fn keys still don't work right.
Any more ideas?
