Hi, I am looking forward to purchasing a Sony Vaio SR, the model I am currently looking at is a VGNSR 210- specs are T5800 2.0ghz, 3gb ram, 250gb of HD. However, there is another model VGN SR 140, which includes a P8400 2.26ghz, everything else is the same but @ $100-150 more.

So my question is basically my question is will that P8400 outperform the T5800 by the price justification, eg. is the performance boost worth the price?
I also know that the FSB is 800mhz, and the RAM is 800mhz, which should be a good match for the T5800, so will the 1066mhz FSB on the p8400 be a setback with the DD2 800mhz ram? I really want the BEST PERFORMANCE for the MONEY. I don't really care if i am paying more for an item if it can be justified with the price.

Please help me, I am purcasing the Vaio very soon. THanks, and have a nice day. ;)

I would definitely recommend the P8400...
the T5800 is a Pentium Dual-Core, which is kinda ancient...
The P8400 is one of the latest Centrino 2 CPUs based on the montevina platform...
It uses less power (25W TDP), and it should be faster than the T5800 by at least a decent amount...
But it all depends on what you going to use your laptop for... If you're not going to do anything CPU intensive, the T5800 should be just fine..

Okay, I would definately go with the BETTER cpu, but my question is why would SONY install a ancient CPU on a brand new Sony Vaio SR 210, which just came out? It also costs $1400 CND, new macbooks in canada are $1350 (with the newer hardware). It kinda doesn't make sense to me for them to have a really bad performance CPU on a high quality laptop(business line up)?

I guess they do that to push the starting price down.. the starting price for the SR used to be $1399USD, but now it's $1194
It's an old CPU, but it can still do daily non cpu intensive tasks just fine
in the US, the SR with the T5800 (1194$) is 105$ cheaper than the new macbook (1299$)

I need a computer that will LAST at LEAST 4 years. So do you think the P8400 is a better investment (eg. spreading the $150/4) instead of buying a new laptop in 2 years if i purchase the T5800?

I appreciate you helping me, thx.

I would say the P8400 is DEF more future proof..
I would def say go for the P8400 if you want it to last for 4 years..

    You're welcome man.
You're making a smart choice by picking the SR ;)
    it's an awesome laptop

P8400 is blazing fast! I am very satisfied with it. I recommend a 7200rpm HDD and 3-4gb of RAM if you really want to futureproof your computer, but you dont need to buy those through sonystyle. If your tech savvy, you can buy them off newegg and install them yourself on the cheap

Thanks guys for helping me. The thing is I live in Canada and there aren't a lot of good Canadian online vendors. Plus, now I don't even know if I can purchase the P8400 (SR 140DB model) anymore since they don't even ship that to Sonystyles retail stores... ;(

Yes I agree, go for the P8400 - lower TDP (25w) = less heat and it is more bang-for-the performance you get, especially since you're expecting to stay 'future-proof' for 4 years..

SR's compact size would also compel me to recommend P8400 = lesser heat the better! And CPUs are non-user upgradeable most of the time (esp Sony) so go for the P8400 (or if you can up it P8600 ;))
