i just have a couple of questions:
i am interested in purchasing a sony vaio sz 650, and i understand that it comes in a carbon fibre top.
    (1) does this pose a problem in breaking easily? if i were to put this into my laptop pouch in my knapsack, would the laptop crack or anything?

    (2) has anyone had any problems with this model since they bought it? i have searched forums, but i see very few problems..

    thanks.

I have one, the carbon thing is in the restpalm area only, it feels very solid to me...
I don't see anything worth to mention, a perfect laptop for me!
If you have any question, just ask since I have this exact model...

Oh, no, sorry, I bought mine from the US then got it shipped to Canada to a friend (had to pay the VAT0 then got it here in Europe where I had to pay AGAIN the VAT (a frakin 450euro), but still remains cheaper than buying it from France or England!!
Can I ask you how much did you buy yours?
I payed 1700USD + 200USD for shipping to Montreal + the unexpected fees...

If the model is the 650n/c (pretty sure that's it) it has a carbon fiber body rather than magnesium or plastics, and no it will not crack. It's actually much stronger and lighter. That's one of the features that makes the high end sz so wonderful. It will however show smudges really easily, as will the aluminum palmrest. Not sure about the the n/c models, but I have a 691n/x with the premium finish and I'm afraid to touch it with my fingernails. Kinda a pain to have something so nice and have to be careful everywhere you go. I will say however that they are absolutely beautiful, very lightweight and durable, and quite powerful for a notebook (especially one of this size).

As far as problems... search all of my posts, I've had plenty. It's got it's share just like any computer released these days. I would however, still definitely recommend the SZ 6 series over any other notebook of this size. One you buy (and yes I think you should) you'll find plenty of info on this forum to help you get it running tip top. Feel free to message me regarding a clean vista install (others will recommend xp) and what apps, programs, and utilities you will actually need.

I carry it with me every day in backpack full of books with just a neoprene case around it, no problems at all. I love it.

Yeah I got rid of that recovery partition and bought a clean vista install disc from portable one. Then I just add the apps I regularly use, make sure everything functions properly, and create a vista restore image. Besides you should know that whenever you buy a hard drive with x gigs you are always going to have a little less. My 200 gig for example, 186 in truth after formatting to maximum size.

There's an interesting post on the board about making your own vista iso with integrated drivers as well. Might want to check that out too.
