    Hi everybody!

I had a Dell Precision M70 (I work with CAD programs) for 6 years now.
I choose to upgrade because new software versions do not work on my old machine.

For some stupid reason I ended up buying a Sony Vaio VPCF220E/B and I discovered that those computers have an awfull screen.

I did not mind the worse graphic card (Dell Precision has Quadro... Sony Vaio a GeForce)
but the horrible quality of the view angles on the Vaio screens, makes me dizzy meanwhile I work.
It is not only that when you move slightly your head the image in the screen changes completly, but you can also see the net of the pixel = image much less smooth. Some time I find myself to move my head to watch a part of the screen with the correct contrast/brightness.... HORRIBLE!

I miss very much my Dell screen which was smooth and clear in every view, with perfect contrast and brightness from everywhere. I am thiking to sell this laptop and go back to Dell only for this reason.

Can someone explain to me why the Dell laptop looks so much better?
and more important.. do you think I can upgrade my Vaio with a better quality screen? maybe in PC-world?
any name of model that can help me to have the Dell quality back would be apreciated... I guess the dell was having UltraSharp? can I mount that on the Vaio?

there is no really point to have a powerfull graphic PC when then the screen that makes you see the images turns everything in to crap!

    Thanks for any advise!

P.S. other horrible thing of this machine is the charger... weight and dimension basically equals having another laptop with you...
Keep away from Sony guys... GO DELL! precision of course.

P.P.S. I spent an hour to uninstall all these crappy software they preinstall... who use them??

It's a Dell workstation laptop... it's designed for people who *NEED* the screen quality, among other things, over gaming capability, battery life, etc.

In this case, you get what you pay for. If you wanted the best Sony Vaio screen, then the Sony Z is for you.

If you want the best laptop screens as of today, than the RGBLED IPS (aka Dreamcolor 2) panels are probably the best ones (in certain Dell Precision and HP Elitebooks, respectively) for now.

Do you know if I can mount that RGBLED IPS on my Vaio?

for the same price of the Vaio I could get a Dell Precision with this screen:
    15.6in High Definition+ (1600 x 900) White Led LCD Panel

would this be a better screen?

it is always difficult to find information on the screen in tech spech

No you can't. You should send back the F22 and stick with Dell Precision from the sounds of things.

It *should* be a better screen (by merit of being selected to be on a Dell Precision laptop), but it's hard to say without actual tests of the panel.

I've never had any of the issues you've described. To the contrary, I thought that the F22 had the best screen I've ever seen on a consumer-oriented laptop. Then again, I don't have a lot of experience with business-grade, photo-editing-oriented laptops. But when you're looking at consumer-grade laptops, the F22 is about as best as they come, and I certainly didn't have problems with narrow viewing angles, etc.

    @jeremyshaw thanks

I wish I could send it back with refund... but once you opened the packaging they can just subsitute the laptop... but i would just end up with a similar one

My only option is to sell it.. lose around 300 pounds and go for a Dell...
Anyone in the UK wants it? 600 pounds is yours ;).. used it for 2 days.

@Mitlov you probably never tried a good screen... my girlfirend does not see any difference too. But when you get used to a good screen you notice much more the difect of the low class screen. It is just incredible that on the Vaio, which are suppose to be for graphics, they put this crap.

Since screen quality is very important to you, why didn't you check the screen out a store before buying?

I could be wrong, but I think that you're too accustomed to your Dell Precision notebook screen that anything else just looks bad to you right now. I'm even bold enough to bet that even if you're given a VAIO Z notebook, you'll still think that the screen on that notebook is crap as well.

I humbly suggest that before you sell your newly bought VAIO F notebook (since you couldn't return it for a refund, thus what else will you lose), use it for one whole week, without ever touching your Dell Precision during this period of time. I'm sure at the end of the week, you'll find that the VAIO F screen isn't that bad at all. You may even prefer it over your Dell Precision notebook.

    Good luck. :)

The Vaio F22 full HD screen should have been your choice. Don't get the low end screens in Vaio's, I did that mistake with my FZ, they have very poor viewing angles.

@Louche I find out how good was the Dell screen when I had to work on the Vaio one. I did not think that screen quality was issue for me before... I just find it out

@SPEEDwithJJ yes that is a reasonable advise... I'll try to get used.
some problem like view angles just look worse though

But true.. I will wait to sell

Are you in the US or elsewhere? In the US, the F22 only comes with Sony's top-of-the-line "Vaio display premium" screen. However, in other markets, there are lower-spec screens available on the F. Maybe you got one of those?

Possible... infact I bought it in UK and also from PC-World...

in any case thumb down for Sony... with the same price I could have had much better from Dell. I saw Vaio and I thought I was going for something safe... instead..

I'm sorry you don't like it, but these comments are still ridiculous:

It sounds to me that one of two things is true:

    (1) either you got a lower-spec non-US model without the "vaio display premium" display (in which case you shouldn't be flaming Sony; you care about the screen more than anything else but you didn't buy the one with the nice screen), or

    (2) you're being overdramatic. NotebookCheck.Net, one of the most reliable notebook review sites out there, commented on narrow vertical viewing angles, broad horizontal viewing angles, and brought up none of the other complaints you have. Review Sony Vaio VPC-F22S1E/B (FHD) Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews Overall, they gave the display an extremely high 90% out of 100% rating.

By the way, a Dell Precision with the PremierColor 1080p screen (which I'm presuming is what you are raving about as so great), the cheapest i7, and 4 GB of ram, and the same size HDD as the F22 comes in at TWICE the price as a US-market F22 with the Vaio Display Premium 1080p display. Maybe UK pricing is vastly different, but unless it is, you're comparing apples to oranges. It'd be like saying that the US-market F22 is far superior to an Inspiron 14R. For twice the price, it'd better be...

    @OP

Not trying to be rude but I feel instead of bashing Sony you should have at least done some research before buying the particular F22 model that you got. It has a 1600x900 Vaio Display Plus screen which is an average display.
You should have gone for the F22 with Vaio Display Premium which has both higher brightness and higher contrast than any Dell Precision RGB LED machine or the F21 3D which is second to none with regards to screen no matter what you compare it to - consumer OR business grade workstation laptops. Its viewing angles are superior to even the super expensive HP Elitebook Dreamcolor IPS.

Sony makes a lot of average screens but also makes greater number of outstanding notebook displays than any other laptop manufacturer. So next time, do some proper research before you get anything.

yes you r right... I just did not notice how much important the screen was before to switch between this two. So I did not bother.

Do you think that if I ask PC-World or any other shop it might be possible to change my screen with one of those you said?

the F22-Vaio Display Premium should be compatible... ?

They may allow you to change the PC. Particularly if you return it in its original packaging and buy a replacement PC from them which is more expensive. Worth a try.

It seems very unlikely, why don't you return the machine and get the F22 with Vaio Premium Display ?

because I changed already a machine, they will not change it again.

I toke a 13" and then change my mind... that is also why I could not inform myself properly about this new machine.

How much is it the Vaio F22 with premium screen?

even if I pay they will not change screen?

In the US, the F22 with the Vaio Display Premium normally starts at $999, but the configure-to-order option is down because they're about to release a mild refresh (new Intel CPU). There's a prebuilt model for $1299 with Blu-Ray, 6 GB of memory, and a 640 GB 7200 rpm HDD.

16" Full HD Performance Laptop | VAIO F Series Laptop | VPCF22BFX/B | Sony USA

Best Buy already has the Vaio F23 (the update to the F22) up on their website. For $1099, you get the 1080p Vaio Display Premium display, a 2.2 GHz quad-core i7, a 540M, 8 GB of memory, and a 750 GB HDD (though only 5400 rpm):

    Sony - VAIO F Series Laptop / Intel® Core™ i7 Processor / 16.4" Display - Black - VPCF236FM/B

Changing out a screen seems to me like it would be expensive and invasive for what really is not a very expensive machine (at least in the States).

The problem is PC world is not authorized to change screens. And Sony will NOT change it to the screen of a higher model.

It looks like PC World has the sony with the premium display but it costs £1800. They would probably let you swap your PC with that PC if you part with an additional £850! No idea whether it's worth it - it seems expensive to me.

Otherwise you can try to return it, or if not, sell it, and then get anything you want. I think you need to ask PC World your questions.

yes too much... at this point I would go for a good precision, at least I would know where I am going.

Probably I will keep this laptop... anyway at the moment I am not using it much for work... in few month I will sell it for buy a precision.
a refun would be the best, but they told me last time already that I could only swap laptop.

I might also try this place for change the screen though:
