    Sony Vaio Screen goes black

    My Sony Vaio Laptop screen will go black a few seconds after putting in my password. It's not like it shuts down - you can still barely make out the windows on the screen, so it's not shutting off. Finally figured out it doesn't do this when it's not plugged into the power cord. But the power cord is working because it charges the battery. Is it just a bad cord/charger or am I dealing with something else? Laptop is about 3 years old. Thanks!
