InTrigger has been trying to unlock the wireless module in his TZ90 (maybe TZ91) for a while. It's hardware lkocked, and I don't think he's been successful thus far. He does have a Japanese version of the TZ though.

If he has the Japanese version, then it's a HSDPA (GSM) module with a SIM card, not EVDO (CDMA). That's different from the Sprint module used in the U.S.

I have the same question -- thinking about buying a TZ198 in the U.S. for use at home in Moscow, where there is a great EVDO data company called SkyLink.

Anybody have any idea? Would be way cool. The other problem is if it doesn't work, SkyLink doesn't seem to sell any EVDO add-on cards in the Expresscard format -- only PCMCIA which the TZ doesn't support.

You can be 99% sure that it's locked to Sprint. Since we also have Verizon EVDO in the U.S., Sprint would want to prevent people who use this modem from switching to the enemy.

Yeah, anyway the EVDO over here is not the same -- it's based on a 450mhz network, something called CDMA 2000. Crap. I don't think I can even get an Expresscard modem for that system. This company sells modules; I wonder whether they can be swapped out?

I think the carrier need to enable the serial number of the evdo card, if they do this, the problem will be solved? My tz is american, is evdo and my carried is evdo also.

CDMA2000 is the 2.5G EVDO implementation of the CDMA protocol, it should be backwardly compatible with EVDO. :)

    Hello

Try to check this. There no simcard on this model so its hard unlock it not like older model that has a simcard and can be unlock by contacting sony and they will give you the unlock code.

Well, it's been a while since the last post. Anyone have any luck?

A potential problem I see is that I don't know what to do with the SmartWi software. If I try to do anything with the WWAN card, it wants me to registere with Sprint. So, if I don't have to unlock the card, I still have to deal with this software. Does anyone have any advice? I'd like to see if I can register this with my wireless provider, but not sure what to do with Smartwi... since it is necessary to keep Smartwi.
    thanks.

i'm also interested on this topic.
i've asked one of the Sony sales but they say that it would only work on Sprint's network.

I've got past SmartWi and it's asking for MDN and MSID, but I won't really know whether it actually worked, until I get an account setup. I'd post the instructions of what I did, but I don't yet know they do anything. If you have an account ready to set up, then I could post them.

I don't know when I'm going to set up this account, so I thought I'd just post what I have so far. This seems to have gotten me to a point where where maybe I could add another connection. However, I'm not sure if the activation code is going to cause a problem. I'm not in the service area for the Sprint network, so I'm not worried about connecting to it, or agreeing to anything. If you are, you might want to be careful...

    START up Smartwi
    - click on WWAN
    - let initialization run
    - tell it you want to connect by telephone
    - click I agree and next
    - will give hardware info (write it down, as you may need it)
    - click Finish (activate your sony... dialogue comes up)
    - copy down info (in case you need it)
    - click NEXT
    - it asks for your activation code
    - if you put in 000000 or 123456, it will let you click next (it doesn't seem to care what number you put in for the activation code at this point)
    - then it asks for your MDN and MSID

I would imagine any EVDO provider would provide these terms. I've tried working through choosing different options, but this is the only way so far that will let me get this far. Maybe someone else has a better idea. Maybe the Sprint software can be removed. This is all I can offer, so far, as I just started on this saga.

anyone gone any further with this? Sprint service is a bit pricy and I can get a discount for verizon through my job. I would love to have this internal capability instead of using the USB network card that verizon has.

I'm pretty sure you can't... CDMA isn't so prone to unlocking as GSM, if I'm not mistaken.

I live in Belgium and bought a TZ21 which was made for Ireland. Software for WWAN was T-mobile which does not exist here. The built in card is Option and it is accessed over USB. At one point I installed an Option 3G card for the express slot and found that its software would work with the built in WWAN. I have uninstalled the branded T-mobile software. If you can find a generic option driver that could help also.

for EVDO the phone number is hard coded into the device AFAIK. In Sweden I also use EVDO rev A cdma450 (similar to Russia), there is a superb router called D35. I would not bother using built in modems for CDMA450, that technology can give you very long range but then you need decent antennas.

Look for router model MV410 from www.axxesstel.com

Don't know if russian Sky LINk has it
