    Hi,

I have to fix this notebook for a friend, but I don't know the HDD model or brand. I entered on the bios but it doesn't show. Is there anyway I can get it?

This notebook has hdd problems and I saw an UUID on bios, so here's another question: Is there anything I need to do before replace the hdd or only Sony can replace it?

Open my computer. Right-click a partition on the drive (likely C) and choose Properties. Go to the Hardware tab.

    Thanks for your quick response!

But sadly, Windows is unaccessible at this moment.. that's why I want to run some kind of diagnostics tool from HDD manufacturer.

Right now I can't even run Vista's DVD for repair.

Also, is there any kind of "protection" to replace the hdd? Is there some kind of dissassembly instruction?

You could open up the hdd cover on the bottom of the laptop and physically look at the make and model of the drive.

Another way would be to boot a linux "live" cd and check specs from that operating system:
you could download the ubuntu 10.04 (x86) cd image (.iso format). and burn that image to a cd. Then put it in the laptops cd drive and reboot, It will load up as a live cd with nothing written to the hdd. then run the "terminal" program and type "sudo lshw -C disk". it will then output the make, model and serial number of all the drives. S.Prime, thanks for the tip, but now the notebook is going to Customer Assistance, for hdd replacement. I think it's really dead as I couldn't even run Vista's Recovery Console.

Learning a new trick every day :)
