Hello to all Vaio SR owners,
I'm here to describe a weird experience that i had with a Vaio SR.
The model that i purchased was " Sony Vaio VGN-SR39VN/S".
It seemed as the perfect laptop. However, when i opened the monitor lid, holding it from the left side, the screen started making "waves" from the top left and bottom left side (those waves you get when you push your lcd screen with your fingers anyone?).
At first i was amazed. The "waves" continued to happen for 2-3 seconds, even after i positioned the monitor to the height that i wanted. Moreover, with every little vibration (e.g. typing on the keyboard), the "waves" where coming back ! Then, i did the same thing, but this time from the right side. Same thing. Waves again ! I started scratching my head. My Samsung NC-10 netbook does not make ANY waves when i open or try to position my screen in the height that i want, nor the previous laptops that i owned. LCD screens do make waves only when you put pressure/force on the back of the lcd with your fingers and/or when you put pressure/force with your fingers on the front of the screen.
Why the Sony does this ? Isn't supposed to be superior quality ?
Next, i did the same thing but this time i carefully opened the lid from the absolute top-middle. No waves this time. I then repeated the procedure from the left and right side for 2-3 more times. Waves again ! It appears the lcd screen of the laptop is not fitted correctly / bad design / bad implementation. Trying to open/position the screen from its sides and/or every little vibration that happens and the screen starts making "waves" from both left and right sides.
I returned the laptop to the store. The guys at the service dept. checked it with me and agreed it was a faulty one. They suggested me i go on the "demo floor" where i can find another SR and see if this same thing happens on another SR. I went down, found an identical SR and tested the problem with the procedure i explain here: Same results, but a little bit "smaller waves" but the waves where still there !
I now have returned the laptop and i'm in the process of searching for answers. Please let me know if you also expirience the "waves problem" with your SR, or i just happened to get one from a defected batch.
Thanks in advance,
thanasisdev

I see it more like a defected batch or just your luck to get a citron. I could not dig up much information about this waving thing on the net.
Hope you work it out with the seller.
cheers ... -
Hi
Thanks for your reply.
Is there any owner of the SR39VN/S that can test and confirm this issue ?
His help would be much appreciated.

I only have a SR290, but mine does not do that. while opening it or moving it from either side, no matter how fast, there is no distortion. yes the lid is slightly flexible, but no distortion at all.

Thanks for your reply S.Prime,
Anyone with an SR390 that can confirm this ?

I have an SR390...no screen waves when opening or closing. -
Hi mattedmunds
Have you tried opening it from the left top or right top ?
Mine was making waves when trying to open it from the top right or top left but not from the top middle. Also with a little vibration, e.g. moving it , was start making the waves again.
One more positive reply that the problem is not widespread and i think mine was faulty one. -

Hi t1m1t and Thanks for your reply.
Yes, i'm talking for this usual kind of waves which happen when you touch the lcd with your fingers.
The SR that i got was making waves even when i was moving the screen up-down holding it from the sides and still too far from the actual screen. Exactly the movement you do in order to open your laptop.
I haven't seen this kind of behavior in any other laptop. Seemed like WAY VERY SENSITIVE from normal ! Moreover, This is the MOST COMMON thing one user will do to his laptop - e.g. open it's screen from the sides.
I'm really in confusion here. Can this be a thing of the flexible construction of the Vaio SR laptop casing ? Or is it just a defected batch ?
Moreover, i could get the waves even with the slightest vibration on the table that i have the laptop. I do the same experiment with my Samsung NC-10 netbook -in reality i have torture it to death !!! - and nothing but NOTHING happens.
On the opposite side, if i was just vibrating a bit the SR, it would have produce an OCEAN of waves
I'm really in confusion guys. Can the vaio have SUCH bad screen casing that can start make waves by *just* moving "slightly" or adjusting the screen ? I think not.
Any ideas ? -

Hi mattedmunds
Thank you for giving me hope.
I'm going to order a new SR49 tomorrow.
I will ask the guy to open it in front of me when it comes.
If it has the same problem, i will tell them to bring me another one and i will repeat the process till i get a good one.
Thank you all for your patience, your kindly help and for giving me courage with this crappy situation.
