So I noticed that when the balanced (not quiet) mode is enabled the fan comes on and off. It is not really audible in a room with other sounds but if I am alone at home I can hear a low humm when it is pushing air. I was curious how loud the fan was for everyone else under low loads and cpu temps (P9500) of about 37-40C.

The fan in my Z790 was very audible in any mode. I could clearly tell when it came on. In balanced power mode (Vista), it would go on and off sporadically and was a noticeable "whirring" noise - not annoying, but much louder than it needs to be compared to other (business class) laptops. In high performance, under load, it again is noticeable but didn't quite rival the other sounds coming from the laptop. Though I imagine it would make BluRay disc viewing less enjoyable.
