    Hi all,

i'd like to ask those of u that have the Z with the i7 what sort of 3d marks (06/vantage) u are getting? I'm a light gamer and I'll like to see what sort of boost I should expect in the 3d department from an i7 in comparison to say the basic i5-450?

    thank u!

idk know if itll make much difference because its the i7 600 series which are still dual core. The i7 700 series and up are the quad core. I dont even understand why they call it an i7 when its not much different form the i5's

I'm not sure how important a CPU is in 3D rendering, but the rule of thumb around here is that if you're a gamer (myself included), the i5 will handle anything your 330m can throw at it because the 330m is the bottleneck when it comes to gaming.

They call it differently for 1) marketing reasons and 2) there's actually a difference in the specs. It's like why some things are called super/premium because they're better. However, how much better is always the question. When it comes to gasoline, unless you're driving a sports car, you really don't need premium. The unleaded will perform just as good as the premium in an average car. Likewise, for the average person the i5 will be more than enough, BUT if you're going to be doing CPU intensive tasks (ie. video encoding, hardcore virtualization, etc.) then the i7's for you.

i7, i5 is just for marketing purposes. They do have exactly the same capabilities, just cache and clock rates differ between them. You could call them i7's altogether.

Thank u guys for the posts but noone answered my question!
I'm more interested about the difference between the entry cpu option and the highest cpu option in respect to 3d perfomance that's why I was asking for numbers.
So anyone that can enlighten me ?

Come on man, u're supposed to be a Notebook evangelist and u're responding with a video of how to google? I've checked the database ten times but u know that a real score can be very different from a reference platform score...

i5-450 vs i7 .. depend on model of i7 but, start around 20%

I work in 3d as well, and the most important thing for me is the cpu (by that i mean where i will put more money in), im more productive with good cpu because of time render, specialy when im testing a texture/light/etc..., i save lot of time there. But... when i do a final render i don't realy care sometime about the render because i do it during night.

Im waiting for the Sandy Bridge and Bobcat to buy my (first)laptop.

What does 3d performance mean for you? If you are talking about games, the cpu is not the limiting factor in the Z (as already lined out here), when you talk about engineering/CAD 3d you won't notice any difference - you will if you take another machine with a quadro or firegl.

    Just my 2 c

I have a new Z12 with I7620m with stock drivers. If you post a link for 3dmark06, I'll run it when I get home tonight. To lazy to Google it.
