You can buy a full HD unit without paying a premium for it right now, that is, if you don't mind going through an Importer.
There are few out there but they normally charge quite a bit for their service. One place I found and ordered from, Users-side, was an exception.
-
Thanks. I actually sent Users-side an inquiry. I got a reply that was mostly in Japanese, but I think it was just an acknowledgement of my inquiry, not a price quote. How quickly did you get a quote? A concern about going through an importer is the warranty, as discussed above. For obvious reasons, I'd much rather buy in the US and get a full US warranty. Then there's the price, although I might be willing to pay some premium to get what I want sooner rather than (who knows how much) later.
One question I had for Users-side was whether -- since I would effectively be buying from Japan -- I can get a Z configured with an SSD and a second SSD or HDD in place of the optical drive. I think the answer is no, but does anyone know for certain? -
The best thing to do is to find out exactly how you want the Z configured before contacting them and then request the Z to be purchased/configured to your specific needs.

It's in Japanese but it's not hard to figure out what's what.
*Edit
Nevermind, you can't order SSD with HDD at Sony Japan. -
Thanks for checking out what was offered in Japan. That saves me some unnecessary effort. I guess I'm back to thinking I'll try to wait until the full HD display is available in the US without buying the glossy Signature Series. (By the way, why wouldn't Sony offer us something other than a glossy finish in their Signature Series? Even if I were inclined to spend that kind of money to get the full HD display, I wouldn't want the one particular finish that's available.)
I just wish we had some idea how long that will be. Sony had better hope no other company introduces another light 13" laptop with an i5/i7 CPU and an HD display. I don't need the dedicated GPU, switchable graphics, or even the optical/Blu-Ray drive. In fact, I'd prefer to have a second SSD or HDD. Maybe Sony won't have any competition in this class for some time, but I'll be looking. -
I just called SonyStyle U.S. and apart from the Signature series, they have no idea when or even IF the 1920 screen will be available in the U.S. Don't get it why they would offer it in England which is a much smaller market, and not U.S.
Looking at the youtube video the 1920 screen looks a lot better.
Also, does anyone know if the i5 processor makes the battery last longer than the i7? I have seen no info on the subject. -
The i5 is giving better battery usage and only 5% worse performance over the i7-620m. i5-520 is a 32-nm chip with 35W MAX TDP. i7-720qm is a 45-nm chip with 45W MAX TDP. The i7-720qm can only beat the 620 and 520 in heavy video processing and such, not general usage or gaming.
The other gem is the 32-nm 35W TDP i7-620m but that is 50% ($100) more expensive with a marginal gain. so it's not worth the money IMO. -
I didn't think the i7 720 (quad core) was available on Z? Only the dual core 620 i7.
I can't understand why intel gave the 620 core i7 brand. It's basically just a couple clock speed ticks upgrade from the i5 520? -
The only i7 available (and I use the term loosely right now) on the Z is the dual core i7-620M. The quad core i7-720QM is not an option, not only because it has a higher TDP, but also because it lacks integrated graphics (which means battery life would REALLY suck as you'd have to use discrete graphics).
The only difference between the i5-520M or i5-540M and i7-620M is the higher clock speed and a boost from 3mb to 4mb cache.
Is the i7 worth it? Probably not. Does my Z have it? Hell yes! -
Ahhh....Just really wish they would get a move on offering the 1920 in the US soon. I dont wanna have to order it with a British keyboard... Come on Sony!!!
-
You can order it from the Netherlands...the laptops there are with US keyboards.
-
Just doing some iPhone dpi viewability testing, don't mind me.

Does anyone know the part number for that LCD and whether it can be bought elsewhere and later installed in another 13" laptop model?
13.1" LCD Part number? -
I need to save up some money now to get this beautiful by the end of the year!
