I have been looking to buy a sony vaio Z. I believe its the 2012 version since I'm going to purchase from sony directly.

I have done a lot of research into the laptop and I'm convinced on everything except the fan noise.

Fan noise bothers me greatly. I currently own a 15 inch macbook pro and was hoping to find a pc that reflects its lack of fan noise.

I have heard that the sony Z has fan noise problems. I will be using the laptop for school and everyday tasks. Some photo editing here and there.

Can anyone who owns a 2011 or 2012 sony Vaio Z confirm what the fan noise is like, and if anyone has worked with a macbook pro, along with a sony vaio z tell me how does their fan noise compare to each other.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Actually I have a Vaio Z2, if you concerned about the fan noises, buy the i5 model since it's much cooler and my noise has never exceeded unbearable level. It's not that bad actually, just buy and enjoy your z2.

During normal work you will not hear the Z2 at all. When performing CPU heavy tasks it will get louder though. But there is an option for silent operation, which will limit the maximum clock speed. So if you are working somewhere where the Z2 must not get loud, you have that choice as well.

there are 3 profiles you can choose. Silent mode (minimal fan operation, lower clock speeds). Balanced Mode and Performance Mode.

These modes can restrict the maximum CPU clock and thus the amount of heat generated which directly affects fan speeds.

If you do not need maximum power but a silent notebook silent mode does exactly that.

It might get loud during photo editing, as that stresses the CPU a lot. As for any everyday tasks like browsing the internet, or watching videos, the laptop is silent.

From personal experience, when I play games using the graphics card in the dock, the fan noise perfectly acceptable.

My Z2 is silent most of the time even though I set my machine for performance and have the i7 chip. Even when the fan is on it doesn't bother me but that may just be me, others disagree.

It's really a personal thing. Some people are much more sensitive when it comes to noise generated by a computer. It also depends heavily on where you use your computer. If there is backround noise like a radio or air condition that's a different story compared to a totally quiet room.

Or, if the sound of the fan really bothers you, just crank up some music played through the Z2's speakers and....oops. Never mind. ;)

Where do I change such settings? Are you referring to the battery options in Windows?

Open the VAIO Control Center, it's under power management. When set to silent mode it is that, silent!

Is there any software that can shows by how much it's been underclocked and the cpu temperature? or any other related infos.

any software that shows your cpu clock. Temps are very dependent on your ambient temps and also whether you have i5 or i7.
