Hi, if I got the Lenovo T400's led option 14.1 wxga+ screen (made by LG), would I find it to be in the same league as the Vaio Z's screen? It doesn't have to be as good, but in the same tier?

I really like Thinkpads and would like one for a second larger laptop.

Having used both machines, I would say that the T400 has a better screen.

But let me qualify that by saying that different people look for different things in a screen. Both are 6-bit LEDs with multiple backlights and a 900 pixel vertical resolution, but the similarities stop there.

    - The Z has a very high contrast and high saturation display -- much more so than the T400. The Z is going to look far more vibrant. But that's not the same as natural, where I believe the T400 has an edge.
    - Both screens are too cold, with the Z leaning towards purple and the T400 towards a blue tint.
    - The Z has a very narrow vertical viewing angle -- if you tilt the display or move your head up or down, the colours change quite a lot for a short distance. The T400 is much better here.
    - The T400 also has a matte screen, which means less reflections. You can use it with a light behind you with far less problems, and at the lowest setting, it's far less problem to use it at night time without disturbing your spouse or pets. (The Z can be made better by buying the $70 privacy filter, which gives it a matte finish too. But it also makes the screen less crisp, and -- naturally, cause it's its job -- not viewable from a lot of horisontal angles)

But again, it depends on what you want to use it for, and what your preferences are. I'm sure that lots of people would prefer the Z's screen. I'm just not one of them.

Very interesting. I figured the Z has the "best screen on the market" would be the standard reply.

I think the Z screen is pretty much perfect although I agree with everything you said. Colors look almost unnaturally vivid and you're right, I thought the blue looked purple.

But don't get me wrong, I think the Z's screen must be on the short list of top screens on the market. My list would be mbp, mba, Z...and i guess based on what you are saying, the LG-manufactured 14" T400 screen.

    Thank you for your comments!
