I have a Sony Vaio Z790J. I recently tried to install Windows 7 x64 (from msdn) onto my Vaio. It always gets through the install but the second time it reboots (when it tries to start the services, etc) I go straight to a BSOD. I tried changing ACHI, RAID, IDE, none of those make a difference. Has anyone seen this? Of course I blasted my backup partition too so I can't restore Vista x64. Nice move on my behalf!

    Any help would be appreciated.

I am running Windows 7 x64 RTM build 7600 (from msdn too).
The only problem now is video driver. Newest driver from Sony won't work.
You may try install w/o UEFI mode.

I have a VGN-Z590N and have been following the various threads regarding Windows 7. I am correct to assume that I can move to Windows 7 x64, but I'll have problem with the video driver? If so, can I revert to a different driver...until Sony resolves the issue? All other things being equal, I'd prefer to make the move ASAP...so long as the video driver isn't a deal-breaker.

for the Z590 i had zero issues installing a fresh copy of W7x64 (MSDNAA license), used all vista drivers from the sony FTP (check the other threads on this forum), and the only video issue is not having brightness changeability in SPEED mode.

This problem has been discussed so many times that I think it deserves a sticky post.

The solution to this is select your optical drive from the boot manager before loading Win 7 installation. In order to get to your boot manager, press the 'ESC' key when you first turn on your computer and the vaio logo shows up. After that, proceed on with your Win 7 installation.

I tried that, it didn't help. I do see a dos window that comes up right before the windows starting screen that has an error that says something like "boot failed acpi" I can install a blank Windows Vista x64 just fine.

The best way to install Windows 7 and avoid this problem is to use a USB flash drive to install Windows. You can find the instruction here:

    http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-install-windows-7vista-from-usb-drive-detailed-100-working-guide/

As the instruction use bootmgr to boot, it can avoid all the problems. If you have a spare USB flash drive, give it a try. This can also speed up the installation time as well.
