I wanted a quiet laptop along the lines of the T400 or the macbook pros. These are quiet enough for me. I owned a Vaio Z in early 2009 that I got rid of purely b/c of the fan noise. Can anyone tell me if the newest models or a vaio fan control type of software or BIOS upgrade has made the VAIO Z series quiet? Otherwise this was a great laptop.

Have you checked out this thread?

There are many posts discussing about this model fan's noise and personal perceptions of it.
My personal observation is such that it is lower than the SZ model that we have. And I have no qualm with the fan noise.
Play with different settings in the power scheme is all I can recommend, as discussed in length in the mentioned thread.
cheers ... -
Yeah I have seen this one. I didn't find that anything I did really helped at all. It was definitely louder than the lenovos, dell latitude e6500, and the macbook unibodies.

IMHO, to really know for sure, you'll probably have to buy one & try it out yourself for a while. That's the definite way to be sure about the fan noise because you need to have the notebook for at least a few days & use it at your regular environments to be able to make the decision on whether you think the fan noise (if any) bothers you or you can live with it. I'll suggest buying the Vaio Z from SonyStyle or some other Sony authorized dealers/resellers who have a generous return policy to perform this "experiment." Good luck.
Unfortunately, I'm not able to give you any info about the fan noise because this is a subjective topic IMHO. For that, I sincerely apologize. -
and whats about Sony TT ( TT3) model concerning Fan noise ?
cos i own SZ6 - its "awfull noisy", that fuc..ing noise is permanent.. and the price is high. its ridiculous .
the fan is always on high speed and also with the fan there goes a special crappy sound. despite that i am in always in stamina mode.
