Hey guys, I need your help for some undertanding issue regarding the sony vaio Z series. I would like to first say sorry if I double post or its already answer in this forum. I make this post because I need futher understanding and I am receiving my Z series soon. It is a very expensive system I would like to care it properly so there are few series of question needed to be enligthen.

Q1)If I set my drive JBOD, will trim work?

Q2)Is it posssible to store my files in my external harddisk and delete it. Does it effect my SSD degradting? I plan to store my work file in external harddisk to prevent deleting in the SSD? Does this help?

Q3)Are there others ways to slow dowm SSD degration? like storing temp files in SD card.

Q4)The Trim features in SSD for Z series is it auto-enable or there a setting to turn on or scheadule it? If show mine helping me where to turn on?

O5)I ordered with the sony Z with i-link port. Are there any external hardisk running i-link port that suite my sony z? If so could anyone introduce me one.

Please help to enlighten my knowlegde.

Thanks for those whos read and reply and help me out. :)

    Thanks you

1,2,3,4) TRIM isn't currently supported. but it probably won't matter because people on these forums are yet to see any meaningful slow downs. Remember the Z has only been out a couple of months, and surely Intel and Sony will get together and find a way of stopping an issue from arising.

    5) i-link is mainly for video cameras (only sony I believe). i-link is basically a IEEE 1394 port (firewire), so in theory any HDD that supports firewire will support i-link. I just don't know about the plug size (it is smaller then firewire).

I strongly advice you to not JBOD and leave as it is and mostly RELAX.
Speed slow down doesnt seem to be an issue. Again, just relax and enjoy the Z. Leave the SSDs as is and enjoy the speed :)

I would put my least used files on the external drive.

    Thanks for your adivse.

I think i went the wrong way having I-link port. I wanted to run the a fast i-link hard drive but seems i cant buy one in Uk. I rather have 3 USB slots.

So what SSD intel generation using?

BTW Intel does support Trim under Raid 0 which is what the Sony uses. Also sony uses Intel based drives and they are G2 with trim support.

Interesting comments. AFAIK TRIM is not supported under RAID 0 yet and the SSD in the new Z is made by Samsung with its own controller.

BTW, there's some slow down in 4K random write when the SSD (in RAID 0) is full. However, the write speed recovers after some time (in minutes) most possibly due to idle time garbage collection. Moreover I have filled up the drive at least 10 times and haven't noticed any major speed deterioration (4K random write speed remains within the same range). So I am not overly concerned about the degradation issue.

No setting is needed. The SSD does it automatically.

BTW I disable TRIM when using RAID.

There is no reason to do that... and if Intel ever does add trim support (there is no technological reason for Trim to be impossible in RAID) you'd have to remember to re-enable it.

The new paragraph in the help file for last Intel drivers (which falsely advertises trim support) was specific enough to indicate that Intel *is* working on Trim support on all RAID types except RAID 5, it just wasn't ready for those drivers.

I understand. Personally I would keep it disabled till the change arrives.

Don't disable trim, don't JBOD, just leave it as is.
I would update to the latest drivers thought.
