Hi, my Vaio Z1 is not booting up now. It just shows a black screen with the power button light on, what can I do to fix this?

    try this in order:

    turn off laptop
    unplug AC adapter
    remove battery
hold power button in for 30 seconds, then release.
    put battery back in,
    plug AC adapter back in
    turn on laptop.

Nothing worked, I believe that the GPU may be fried, tried opening it up but couldn't find the problem. Would I be able to get the data off the SSDs if I connect both of them with an adapter to a PC and run some data recovery software?

Try with one RAM module at a time.

What else, if anything, is happening? Any other LEDs blinking? HDD activity?

I tried with one RAM stick and then with completely new ones, the same thing still happens. When I turn it on, the HDD activity light is blinking, the LEDs for Number lock, Caps lock, Stamina, Auto and Wifi all work though I can't seem to put it on Speed though. The display remains blank the whole time, not even a back-light is on.

Can you try connecting an external display? VGA. HDMI won't work until the nvidia gpu is working.

Bummer. :( Looks like you need to start shopping for a new motherboard. My commiserations.

Is the HDD activity looking like the laptop is booting? Does it get past your login screen if you go through the motions blind? Eg. swipe your finger on the fingerprint reader a few seconds after booting, etc.

Did you open it up and fiddle around before it went blank? Maybe the cable to the screen is not seated properly.

The HDD activity seems to indicate that the laptop boots. I didn't open it for months, my brother was using the laptop after his Mac broke. He closed the lid at work, came home and the laptop just died and wouldn't power on. It has been repaired by SquareTrade a few times, they kept breaking something else whenever they fixed something! I noticed that they taped down the touchpad cable, it looks like the lock for the cable broke and it would fall out without tape.

I took the laptop apart and attempted to heat the GPU with a Hair Dryer for a few minutes, it still has the same behavior. I think it's time to purchase a new motherbaord.

Would a dead CMOS battery cause the same problem? I remember the time often resetting on this laptop when the battery died, maybe that can be the issue?

I've ordered a new motherboard from eBay, I also just noticed that my Z1 doesn't even have a CMOS battery. SquareTrade must of forgot to put it back in or something.

i would suggest getting in contact with a repair service, the z series was popular and im sure there are thousands of technicians out there that have probably fixed this very problem countless times, its probably an easy fix if its not the mobo.

    ps.that sux

Well I ordered a new CMOS battery on eBay for a few bucks and I'll see if that works. I can hear the windows startup sound as the laptop boots to so I'm thinking it might be the display backlight or something else right now. I can't even use the whole keyboard now since the lock broke off the touchpad connector and the ribbon cable won't stay in.
EDIT: The light for speed will not turn on as well
EDIT 2: I somehow logged in and started Teamviewer. By starting Narrator, I got the code/password to connect. Upon connecting on my desktop, it just showed a black screen and a mouse cursor so I rebooted in safe mode and now the laptop is on but not responding to anything..
UPDATE: I got remote desktop to work! Device manager didn't show the GT330M so I installed the drivers from Sony's website. I get an error for the device now: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)". How can I fix this? The display is still blank and I can't adjust the brightness/audio with Fn. The Driver Version is 8.16.11.888

I decided to try to restore the laptop by using Vaio Care and the laptop won't no longer boots up to Windows, I think it boots to the Vaio Care recovery menu now

Well, I didn't need a new motherboard or anything. The display cable somehow got loose behind the screen, put that back in and the computer works again. I think I put the sensor magnet in the wrong spot though and that doesn't work. Do any of you know where that magnet should go?
