    Hi

I have two Intel 80GB G2 SSD's which are not in use anymore.

1)When I purchase sony vaio z12 (V) serie without an optical drive and a 320GB HDD is it possible to swap out the HDD and mount a SSD instead?

2)If you buy a vaio z without an optical drive is it than still possible to use a caddy and place my second SSD in that compartment?

I think this is better than buy the X serie since I have those two SSD's already.

3)Does anybody know when Sony comes with the new Z serie containing Sandy Bridge there will be still an option without HDD and Optical drive? Is this option mandotory with the Z option by Sony?

You might find some answers in the VPC-Z FAQ.

I don't understand what you're planning to do about your two SSD's and the Z, could you explain a bit more ?

I don't think anybody have any information about sandy bridge in sony Z as this generation is not released and intel do not communicate that much (follow the IDF in San Fransisco for more informations).

Ok, I will give it a shot :).

These two SSD's are not in use at the moment. So wouldn't it be perfect to put these babies in a new Sony VAIO Z?

If I buy one with a mechanical HDD this will save me a few bucks. I can ofc buy a Z with a SSD but than I have to sell these SSDS with a loss. These SSDs support TRIM that is a nice feature too.

OK, then I actually understood well.

I think you can replace the HDD with a 2,5" SSD.
The standard vaio Z SSD is a proprietary 1,8" SSD (a little smaller than standard 1,8" SSDs), but it is possible to put a standard 1,8" SSD in the place of the original one (with removing the metallic case of the SSD, which void the warranty).
I don't know if it is possible to add SSD in this "slot" on the HDD version (it might need an extra cable, but I don't know if the connectors are free or what)

You should ask here, maybe someone can answer this.

Theoretically, it should be possible to use two 1,8" SSDs in place of the sony SSD slot AND to keep the HDD (as you don't seems to need an optical drive).

1- You can replace the 2,5" HDD with one 2,5" SSD. (No replacement parts needed), or

2- Buy propietary FPC Cable from Sony servicesplus ( part number A1781464A ), and install one or two 1,8" SSD. In this case, i think you lose the 2,5" SATA conector, but you can install an adapter for the DVD micro-SATA ( modification required ).

    1. Yes.

    2. Short answer: you don't have to buy a caddy, it's already present in the optical drive's space. There's no space for an additional drive in that space without significant modding.

    Long answer:
    With reference to this figure:

The Sony proprietary SSD sits in the yellow box. The optical drive sits in the red box. For the HDD-optioned Z, the HDD replaces the optical drive (i.e. in the red box). A 2.5" drive does not fit in the yellow box.

Besides the issue with drives fitting, there is the issue of cabling. The disk drives are connected to the motherboard at the location pointed to by the blue arrow. There is another slimline SATA connector shown by the orange arrow.

For the SSD+ODD optioned Z, the SSD connector leads from blue arrow to yellow box, with the ODD using the orange arrowed connector.

For the HDD-optioned Z, the cable leads from the blue arrow connector to the red box. The orange arrow connector remains unused.

    3. Haven't heard anything about the Sandy-bridge Z...
