    Hi,

I have read in different places that the Vaio Z uses proprietary RAM modules, which effectively make post-purchase upgrades impossible. However, I just chatted with Sony support, and got the following statement:

Me: Another question, it says that the 8 GB RAM option is only available with the larger SSD option. Is it possible to upgrade the RAM later, and if so, what modules are compatible?
Agent: It is possible to upgrade the RAM later on and it will not void the warranty provided you follow exactly the steps in the guide you are provided with upon receipt of the model
Agent: that module [sic!] comes with DDR3 RAM so any module of that sort should be compatible. Try to get one with the same RAM though as RAm works more efficiently when it doubles up
Me: Thanks. So that means there is a free RAM slot, i.e. I could simply buy another 4 GB module of 1600 Mhz DDR3 RAM and add it to the existing 4 GB?
Agent: yes you could or you can get a sony technician to install it for you
Me: Ok, that sounds great. Thanks.

Can anyone clear this up please? I like the Vaio Z, but the SSD upgrade is very expensive, and 4 GB RAM does not sound very future-proof. If I could just buy another 4 GB for £25, if would be a much better offer.

[REDACTED] - Sony uses proprietary SDDs and RAM cards, so any upgrade and parts have to be bought from sony.

I would also double Check with another agent.

The one I talked to told me it was not possible at the moment

He just said "however it might be possible in the futur when sony launch new ssd / ram modules" (i asked the agent about both, not only ram)

I'm afraid he was. Another agent first told me that it was upgradable today as well, but after I insisted, he "double checked", and told me that it was only upgradable by sending it to "Vaio Link" He will get back to me with a quote, but if it turns out to be very expensive (and I expect nothing else), I'm going to have to return the laptop.

Sorry for bumping up the old post, but here is the pictures of Sony VAIO Z3 RAM slots and modules, which are just under the keyboard in the middle of it. Upgrade is possible and I'm trying to find 2x8GB memory modules. Please let me know the name of this proprietary slot and if you've seen 8GB modules at all. I can sell my 2x4GB modules. Thanks.
