    Hi,

I've got a second hand Sony Vaio Z5 and the a large chunk of the hard drive is coming up unreadable so I want to get a new hard drive for it.

The problem is that I'm not sure what kind of hard drive it uses. Searching through google has lead me to think it's an SSD but nothing I've come across actually states that the Z5 uses an SSD but others in the Z series do.

Anyone know as to what kind of hard drive these things use? Or even whether I would be able to use a normal 2.5" SATA2 drive.

edit: I've come across a thread on another forum where it's been stated that the Z series use hard drives with a different width than the standard hard drives and therefore can't be replaced. Anyone know if this is true?

As far as I know it could be HDD or SSD. It should be listed in your device manager.

It's a VGN-Z5? (I don't think any VPC-Z's were Z5's) In any case, maybe the data is just corrupted. I say make a ghost image/clone of your drive... then just reformat the drive to see if it's really broken or if the data's just corrupted. Then if it works, just reimage the image/clone back over. If not, then consider getting a new drive. I think the VGN's used 2.5" drives... i'm not exactly sure (but the VGN-Z's did come with models with both HDD's and ODD's unlike the VPC-Z's which came with either SSD and ODD or only HDD because the SSD's are in a proprietary form factor)
