any ideas what could be up here??
thought i'd try posting this problem here

Sony Vaio PCG-9S2M and everything is fine in DOS etc... until WinXP loaded and everything turns so dark, with a bright light you can make the screen out in the background but its so dark like the back light had gone.

    tried this:

1/ a new inverter has been fitted, and plugged it in and its still the same any ideas next?

Its fine in dos, then when it goes to loads windows with the bar it goes dull

2/ checked the cover latch button? could be stuck causing the backlight to stay off.

    thats fine

    any ideas lads?

If your laptop runs fine in DOS and not in Windows I'd say some software (malware??) component messed up something.
-> I mean, if it runs in DOS the hardware can't be broken.

Try reinstaling XP or try replacinbg your screen drivers if you can.
    Maybe run a Virus scan.
ANother thing, try running it for some time in DOS or the BIOS to determine whether this problem is "time related", like for example overheating.

thanks for the replys lads :)

Apparently its on in the bios forever. It just goes dull when the Windows XP loading bar appears. even the same in safe mode

the guy has even tried downloading UBUNTU (linux) and loaded up, its fine until it goes to load into UBUNTU after the loading screen and the lights go off and the screen just turns off. You cant actually see the background.

strange eh  i don't know what else to suggest

    any other ideas??

    Possibly a BIOS problem.
Can you check whether there is a BIOS update available?
