    Hi Guys,

I just picked up a sony viao E series. So far i love it.
    VPCEC1M1E/WI (VPCEC1M1E/WI) : Technical Specifications : VAIO and Computing : Sony

I had a couple of queries.

    1) The laptop is heating up a little.... this is specifically on the left side of the laptop... any one else facing this issue ?

    2) Are all laptops tied down with refresh rate of 60 hz ? I come from a predominantly desktop environment...

    3) I wish to repartition the drive, currently its 500 gig in one partition...and absence of OS disk is raising a problem...

    Thanks!

You should have a choice of 50 Hz and 59.94 Hz at least on my EC , according to the Vaio control center.

    Congrats on your new lapdog!

    1) The laptop is heating up a little.... this is specifically on the left side of the laptop... any one else facing this issue ?

If it's just getting warm then don't worry; quite normal. That part of the chassis is where the action is in terms of hot components. If it's getting hot, as in too hot to comfortably hold, then that's a concern and something you need to monitor.

Check out where the air intakes are on the bottom and make sure they're clear at all times when operating the unit. Your instruction pamphlet will no doubt tell you not to use your laptop on top of your lap, in the process naming it a "notebook".

    2) Are all laptops tied down with refresh rate of 60 hz ? I come from a predominantly desktop environment...

Mainstream notebooks, er, laptops, normally run at that kind of frequency. I think some gaming laptops run higher, certainly any that can do 3D will (120Hz)

    3) I wish to repartition the drive, currently its 500 gig in one partition...and absence of OS disk is raising a problem...

Create the "recovery disk/s" asap, no matter what you do. It's something you should do anyway (having multiple sets is safer) and using these will enable you to partition and format the drive as you wish. Obviously this will be destructive so make sure you've copied all your user data off the machine. The procedure is well explained and if you mess it up you just run the recovery disk again.

There are guides in these forums on how to do clean and semi-clean Windows installations on Sony_Vaios, so you can put on just as much or little of the original bloat as you see fit. If you haven't put any data on the drive yet and aren't using it in anger, you can practise these several times to achieve the best result for you. If you're sad like me, you'll even enjoy it.

Something you might like to consider is making good use of the fact that your particular model E can accommodate two drives. If you make one of them an SSD, upon which you place the operating system and core applications, you will transform the laptop into a very rapid and responsive device indeed. A top speed 64Gb (plenty for the basics) can be had for about 120 quid. There isn't anything that will give you as much bang for buck in speeding things up.

I'm dying to know about the Sony E hard drive bay - could the slightly thicker 1TB HDD's be squeezed in ??

Note that it's only the 17" version of the E series (the VGCEC...) that can hold two drives. I picked this info up off the Sony website but it didn't say anything about the physical nature of the drive bay/s. You could ask in the E series owners lounge thread.

Please, can you tell me if you can see any extra available SATA port in BIOS or Device Manager? You know, like there's some "logical" space for another drive, like you used to have (in gray, if not populated with drives) in the BIOS of your custom-built PC.

OK, I got it myself, yes, there are available SATA ports, one could enable the 2nd bay simply replacing the existing cable/connector with the corresponding one.
