Does the warranty transfer with a Sony Laptop? I'm considering purchasing a Vaio VPCZ12LGX/B from someone who purchased theirs between October and November of 2010. Does the warranty transfer to November 2011?

Is it based only on the service tag or will I need an original receipt? The person I'm buying from cant provide a receipt.

Also, I'm purchasing it from ebay. Do you guys recommend purchasing the squaretrade warranty along with it? (I've read that the palm rests get discolored and there are also long term issues with the fan. Does squaretrade cover this?)

i also bought my vaio from someone else fyi, and while i usually dont care about warranties on laptops, for such an expensive machine i decided to approach sony style personally for some answers.

i dunno about the country you are in, but here in hong kong, sony style requires you have the receipt, and they will photocopy it every time you come in for service. they also recorded the service tag as well as my phone number even when i asked about warranty questions.

but according to sony style, warranty can be transferred to another person but you still need a receipt regardless to prove your purchase date. they dont really care about the ownership name unless its reported stolen or something fishy like that

when i did my warranty claim through sony for "loose hinges" and an "abnormal amount of palmrest wear" (look here) they required a proof of purchase despite purchasing through Sony itself (I told them i'd give them the order number from when I bought it from Sony Style, but the rep told me they needed me to print it out and fax it in despite the fact that it was still on file).

Although Sony replaced my palmrest, i'm not sure if it was a fluke or something else considering that I myself would've considered it "wear and tear". As for the fan, i'm sure something is just loose, my starts buzzing when i boot up my Vaio and for a little while after, but then it becomes quite quiet. SquareTrade is good at what they do and if something fails that is actually warranty-able, they'll fix it/refund you money (check if they'll warranty a used laptop though, I think they only warranty if the seller is approved or something, i'm not sure)
