    Hello everyone

I just place a order today for SZ360 in a local sonystyle store. I did not get the Sony warranty but the salesmen insist on getting the extended "Vaio Onsite" warranty (2 Years).

    1 Year (Free) + 2 Year (325) = 3 Year

If I get the warranty, the salesmen said I can't upgrade my hardware, which I had plans for when I get my SZ360.

    Question

Did you get the warranty? (I want to have a general idea)
Is the "2 Year Vaio Onsite Warranty" really worth the 325 Canadian?
Is the "Accidental Onsite Warranty" worth it? FenderP "airplane+screen" accident really gave me goosebump.

    Thank You in Advance :)

I am a believer in these warranties for laptops only. They are just fragile now. If the motherboard dies (My Sony boards have twice in the past with old computers) or is the screen dies or breaks, the minimum replacement cost through Sony is $700. I travel with min all the time. Heck it has been to war a few times. (Iraqi dust is hell on electronics.) The computer that was warrantied, Sony repaired. The identical one with a one week expired warranty, they wanted $1200 to fix. I never buy warranties...except for laptops.

On site warranty? That wasn't avaible on SonyStyle..

They have SZ360 in Vancouver? They don't even have the SZ320 in Toronto yet...

I got a 3rd party warranty when I purchased mine from ecost. I got an accidental damage warranty for 2 years.

Beyond the first 2 years, I probably wont use my laptop much and spare computers will be rather cheap.

I think the accidental damage is the most important part to have. Otherwise, it's probably not worth it.

Sure it adds on 2 years to the existing one year? My salesman told me it replaces the one year manufacturer warranty so is good only for 2 years, not 3.

if you purchase with an american express, it automatically adds one more year's warrenty to the default one year.

on a related subject. If one were to consider buying a Vaio, I would heavily reccomend buying it through Portable One instead. They are an authorized repair center as well, so you don't have to deal with Sony's notrious service.

OP is buying a laptop in Canada. While Portable One's reputation and service are great -- its not worth the extra customs, shipping, and duty to bring it into Canada. Not to mention the hassle to go through a US company for repairs.

When I bought my TX850 in Calgary from a Sony Store, the sales person offered a two year service for $99, discounted considering my business with that store in the past. I declined because of the auto coverage by my AMEX Platinum card.

In the end, buy what you believe you'll need. Personally, I generally upgrade or find a reason to upgrade within a year or two. Besides, I'm pretty careful with my toys.

Yeah ---- I'm really on the fence about this. I didn't buy the extended warranty for my VAIO. I have bought extended warranties in the past with previous computers (laptops and desktops), and have never had to use them. Ever. I also like to think I'm pretty careful with my expensive things and hope that if anything is going to go particularly sour with my machine, it will happen in a year's time.

Every once and a while I still think that I should re-think about buying the extended warranty (I know you can buy one post-purchase, but am not sure how long that window of opportunity stays open). Ah, the choices we face!
