    Just my 2 cents.
I applied beaups(thanks) method to unlock the brightness for the 1600/900 screen and went outside to check how good is the screen in full sun. I was amazed that not only every level of brightness was ok, but with 0 brightness which indoor is completely dark in full sun I was able to surf perfectly. The text is readable with no problem. Working in Office the time reported was over 8h.

Really it was good in bright sunlight with the backlight off?

Did you run it for 8 hours or did it just report it would run for 8 hours? The two don't always correlate.

Not the ideal condition to do real work but for surfing it was acceptable. Instead of fading in the sun the screen was using the sunlight. 8 h it's just the longest time posted by Windows I've seen on this machine.

So 8 hours are just an estimate calculated by the machine and not the real life usage?

Obviously it was an estimate, who in their right mind would sit 8 hours in the sun, nevermind the eyes, your skin is gonna burn up.

Hmm is this how Sony came up with the 8 hour battery life claim? Run with the LCD backlight OFF? lol

"this bullet proof vest can take a .45ACP round fired from 20ft away!"

"are you gonna start there and let a dummy with a MP5 fire at you for 8 hours?"

I think 8 hours with the standard battery is only achievable with minimal processor load.

Using BatteryMon to monitor power usage in 5 second intervals and estimated remaining battery life, I find that using the backlight at best adds maybe 10%. It's processor usage that really drives up power consumption.

Wi-Fi on and once the system has settled in (after initial bootup), reading pdf & word processing, it uses about 12W of usage. Anything more and it jumps to to 14-16W.

For comparison, playing Dragon Age Origins on full HD resolution used >40W and my fully charged extended battery did not last a 2 hour flight...

I easily get 5 hours (probably close to 6) with the standard battery with normal usage. I think the backlight off may give you an extra 10% or so.

The Windows Battery Estimate needs a little bit of time to settle and can be quite inaccurate initially.
