I'm thinking of ordering a Z from Conic and since they source from japan I can get a DVD less Z with a standard HDD which I can upgrade to a more standard SSD

Anyone any thoughts about this ... good idea or bad ?

That's what I did. The Japanese version allows for more optons, such as TPM, FHD, wireless 6300 (3 antennas). If you can live without the DVD, and prefer to have an upgradeable drive, then it's not a bad idea.

The HDD version also comes with an unused slimline SATA port (otherwise used for the optical drive), so it looks like two standard SSDs can be used in RAID0. I just got the cables today and I'll be confirming by Sunday.

Did the same. I got a Japanese Z with standard HDD and then upgraded it with an OCZ Vertex SSD. This machine is a beast. Friggin love it.

I didn't go thru Conics mainly because they wanted $500+ extra for the set up I wanted. Not the best place to order through.

I'm in japan so I would order direct.. the only reason that I was thinking about using conics was that he had the i7-620 listed for sale

The Sony JP page has the i7 grayed out so you can't even order it :( also it seems that the JP warranty is better than the US version with 3 years as standard

I have only using Sony's warranty once and it was returned in 2 days with a new battery...

You won't be using DVD much ,if you can afford SSD then go for it
