For reasons I wish not to discuss, I snapped the ribbon going to the Stamina / Speed switch. Now, i'm always in stamina mode.

is there any way to switch to the speed mode using software?

otherwise, i have to spend $80 on that ribbon.

Yes, there is a way. It's really controlled by software anyhow -- all the key does is send a signal that's interpreted as a key press, and software does the change.
With the newer hybrid Intel/nVidia drivers, soft switching can be enabled by flipping a registry key that Sony has set to disable software switching. Search the mammoth thread about nVidia drivers for the Z for details.

Alternatively, if you use Linux, you can also software switch with modified sony_laptop ACPI drivers (but it requires a reboot to take).

Im not sure about that, but you may try :p
The current Z require no reboot, but as for SZ i guess maybe need to reboot once you have click to desire profile (either stamina or speed).

I don't think it'll work on SZ. SZ series read the position of switch on the boot, not by OS.

On the Z, no file is needed. With the stock driver, open the registry, and navigate to HKLM\Sofrtware\nVidia Corporation\Global\Hybrid
Change "DisableUI" from 0x0001 to 0
Add a new DWORD entry called DisablePowerPolicy, and set it to 0
    Reboot

You now get a tool tray indicator of whether you run in speed and stamina mode, and can switch by clicking the battery and choosing the mode there. (It will also switch to stamina if you don't use the machine for a while.)

Thanks for your help & I really appreciate that. :)

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the hybrid software switcher to work with your suggestion. At least that didn't work on my Vaio Z690 running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, BIOS version R5031M3, & the latest Sony stock Nvidia GPU driver (version: 8.16.11.8735).

However, there are some good news, which are described in the following link:
