Right now, I have Core 2 Duo with speed P9800 2.9Ghz Speed.

I have a plan to change my laptop to the new Z series with i7 620M @ 2.66Mhz with speed up to 3Ghz.

Will it be any obvious speed improvement?

Anyone know the any link on the website which have information of their benchmark?

I dont think its going to be very different - though the new graphics card and quad ssd will.

Looking on Kunkoku website in japan - comparing -

    Z93 3.06ghz, 8gb ram, ssd with

    new Z i7 2.66ghz, 8gb ram, new quad ssd

The crystal benchmark was about 33% up.

Im going to wait for the refresh...which usually comes hot on the heels of a launch - 4-8 weeks anyway......where there will probably be bigger processors available...and maybe usb 3 which is notably missing from this launch imo.

You haven't said on how you plan to use the laptop so I can't really comment. If you want to do some serious number crunching, then yes you will see a difference. If you just use your laptop for general use and general applications then I would advise you to just keep your current Z series as it's still better than most of the laptops available.

But the Vaio Z battery life sucks compared to Asus/Acer's 8-10 hr battery life. I'm lucky to squeek out 4 hours in Stamina mode.

What's the processor of the Asus/Acer if it is a CULV i wouldn't be surprised that it could squeeze out 8-10hrs you have to bare-in-mind that the Z uses a P series processor which is much more powerful and battery starving processor. On a daily basis i could squeeze 4.5 hrs of life out of my Z with bluetooth and 3G connection on and brightens at 2 notch only.

I honestly don't know any acer/asus with the same P series processor that could squeeze the same battery life as the Z series and also weight the same as the Z series, but please feel free to correct me ;)

The UL50vt's SU7300 ships overclocked and undervolted to come VERY VERY close to the performance of the P8400. Which is pretty good considering that the SU7300 only has a TDP of 10watts. Not enough people really give the UL-models a chance, because they're awesome machines.

hehe 2 notches in a well lit room is enough for me, i have good eyes ;)

I agree that Asus UL series are good machines, I would recommend them for anyone with a budget and in need of good machines, compared to Toshiba's Portege T series, Lenovo and Acer's i think the UL has the best spec and price, I'm planning to get the UL20 for my wive as well ;)

But i have to disagree that the SU7300 can come close to the P9500 my vaio use despite of the technical specs, I have actually tried the UL30 series for about a week and i have problems with running Adobe lightroom 2, Scansoft ominpage, words, firefox and winmedia player at the same time while I don't in the vaio, i know processor is not the only factor, but at least both has the same Kingston SSD V series and 4GB of ram. Also the UL30 weigh more than the Z, 3.74 pounds (UL30) vs. 3.3 pounds (vaio Z). the UL50 and UL80 are actually a strong contender as well with new Nvidia G210M graphics and 512mb of memory, but their weigh comes in mind as well 4.8 pounds is not an option for me and probably some other road warrior :)

but all in all IMHO the UL series notebook is a good notebook, good specs, good warranty (here in my country) and most importantly it has good price :)

The old vaio Z weighs in at around 3.3lbs and the new ones at 3lbs. Not quite sure where you got 2.7lbs from...

I don't know what model you own but did you did turn the backlight keyboard of and if it has the ambient light sensor?
Did you also set the Intel GMA drivers to max power savings?
Did you also tweak your wireless adapter settings in the control panel?
Also, if it has it did you try putting it in silent mode in the vaio control centre
and using that with power saver?

The new Z weighs 2.9lbs without the optical in place and a stripped 2.5 SSD.
    Forum member dimension6 weighed it.

Wait for the refresh and the reviews it brings along with it. I don't expect 'casual' buyers to notice a big difference because TurboBoost to 3.0GHz I think will be severely impaired with downclocking due to heat management issues.

As Steve78 said, unless you do hardcore number crunching like script simulation, coding etc etc, you will NOT find the CPU upgrade of too much benefit. I do alot of Visual Studio so would find any CPU upgrade nice, but the heat issue in something the size of the Z is always a limiting factor...

The Japanese Z93, which if I'm correct runs the T9900 C2D CPU, is more demanding on the battery than the P series wattage-wise. Anyways, the T9900 is downclocked and idles near the 2.6GHz mark with the mobo trying to keep the heat in check. It will go to its full 3.06GHz but only at short increments at a time (10 second bursts).

I'll be surprised if the i7 on the new Z will and keep on 3GHz+ for extended periods of time; there has been a heat-sink redesign but it doesn't look too significant. Alas... Waiting for the reviews...

It's actually the first time I heard / read that there is a P9800 C2D CPU. Wonder if a P9900 exists, if it downclocks alot like the T9900, and if I could fit that on my Z26...
