    Guys,

I have just ordered a vaio Z series laptop in the UK. The one I ordered comes with a 500gb HDD and no optical drive. As i understand it the HDD is located in the optical drive bay. Does this mean that the usual slot for the SSD will be free, if so can I buy a SSD and fit it myself.

I sort of wish now that I had just bitten the bullet and gone for the 512 SSD in the first place but too late now. :(

    thanks

Just as said many time on this forum : VPC-Z's SSD is proprietary and it's shape is made to fit the Z's SSD slot.

You can't add a standard SSD by yourself BUT you might found proprietary SSD drives on sonyparts (search for "NAND SSD internals"). Those drive should be installed in the Z with disassembly/reassembly the chassis.

BUT I never heard off anybody who did this until now, which mean you should be careful (plus : availables SSD from sonyparts ranged from $500 to $1200...)

Search the forum for more details

On the other hand, with the HDD model, you can -- unlike with the SSD models -- easily change the HDD for an off-the-shelf SSD, as it has a standard 2.5" 9mm SATA drive bay.

You can look at the new SSDs using SandForce controllers, I think they beat the Intel X-25Ms. While the 4x 128 configuration of the Sony SSD is fast when doing bulk transfer, the 4K transfer speed is limited to that of a single drive. In which case, during normal operation, I think a single SandForce SSD should be faster.

Thanks guy's, the reason I ordered the HDD version was so that I could easily upgrade to SSD in the future. I will have a look around the net and try and find where I can buy the sony proprietary ssd. It would be great to have a tb of storage in this machine with an ssd as the main drive.
