Just had my Sony Z stolen. It has the fingerprint access active so I assume the drive content is protected but can they bypass this feature and crack the password by putting the drive in another machine? Any general advice as to what I should do? I am changing passwords etc obviously and my data was backed up so no prob there

Yes they can quite easily. You would not even need to take the HDD out - just download software, make a bootable flash drive, and remove password at all. Then you have full access and can create a new password. I had to remove the password for my brother once when he locket himself out after forgetting the pass. I would change all the passwords starting from email, banks, services etc.

If you have a bios password and disabled all boot devices other than your hdd, the thief has to take the drive out of the laptop. So you may have more time and he probably won't do this anyway. Otherwise, as mariussx says, you just need to download an Ubuntu live disk.
I would recommend anyone to enable a bios password, disable all boot devices other than hdd and install truecrypt. You really don't loose any speed and your data is absolutely safe. -
Plus, the drive data would only be protected if you actually put it in the encrypted bank with protector suite.
