    Hi all,

I'm new to this site. I hope it's okay to post this as a separate thread. I've searched exhaustively for answers to this question in other threads or for someone else asking the same specific question and I've turned up nothing so here goes...

I have a UK VGN-Z3. It comes with a built in WWAN card, which allows HSDPA connection over T-mobile. My understanding is that the driver is a Quallcom Gobi.

I've clean installed Windows 7. After much hard work and searching high and low, I think I have everything sorted. FN keys work, sleep is available etc (I do have a sporadic wireless drop-off that I didn't have before but that's all). I've updated all the essential bits as per the extremely helpful guidance on here and elsewhere from BIOS through to smart network etc.

On the VAIO download page specific to the Z3 there are no Windows 7 drivers for WWAN. So, I downloaded the original ones from the "originally installed section. The Quallcom gobi didn't want to install at first but I found a workaround online involving changing a particular file ( http://blogs.6bit.com/josh/2009/05/qualcomm-gobi-wwan-card-on-windows-7/). So that was installed and I then installed the original 3G manager. Fingers crossed and, surprise, surprise, it didn't work. The 3G manager comes up with an error message basically telling me that the WWAN is not detected or words to the effect. I tried going to a more recent Z series (Z51) and downloading the equivalent drivers from there. Still nothing. There is some sort of further advice in the link above that might help me but :-/ I don't understand it...!

I use my 3G connection a lot as I'm often on the road and am totally lost without it... Can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance,

    Craig

Pretty sure it's not the Quallcom, but an Option card. That at least is what is fitted to my UK spec Z (Z11).
    Go to this site:
    http://www.option.com/en/support/software-download/
And enter the IMEI number off the base of your Z. It should provide you with the most up to date drivers to use in W7.
Let me know how it goes.

No joy unfortunately. My IMEI number doesn't bring any products up. I think it is the Quallcom because that is what the "originally installed" download for WWAN is on the Sony download site...

The help (and link) is most appreciated. However, no joy still. I had the install problem (see link in my original post). I did the workaround which worked on about the 4th time of asking. I now have those drivers installed but still no WWAN. My 3G connection says I have my mobile broadband (WWAN) device could not be found.

Under my devices in control panels I have, under unspecified, "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9221 (COM15)". Yet still nothing works and no HSDPA connection...

    Any suggestions??

I'm sorry, it's not the lastest version, try the one from Z890's driver's page

I have been battling with this problem.

For anyone with a UK Vaio Z31 that needs to install Windows 7 64bit just go to the Sony site and download the drivers for the Z51 which is exactly the same laptop bar a couple of bit.

I made the "mistake" to install win 7 from the upgrade dvd I got yesterday.
Now WWAN does not work either.

When I turn it on WWAN with the smart network 3.x, the device is turned on but apparently the drivers do not load most of the times. Once they load, the consecutive drivers for the modem and ethernet adapter that appear are not working properly.
I have tried to uninstall and install the drivers etc. it just does not seem to work.
I wonder if there are any more recent drivers (win7 64bit).
Interestingly enough, the thing works when upgrading from a working config in vista...

    Update:
Now I was able to make the drivers install and show up properly in the device manager...
but now the 3G connection manager gives me an error code 31 and cannot connect...

For some reason I just made it work.

    Install SmartNetwork3.x first.

    Turn on WWAN.
Install the Gobi Sony drivers first.
Then install the Gobi Sony images.
    Restart.
Win7 should start with WWAN running.
The devices (ethernet, modem etc.) should show up in the device manager. If there is a driver error, install manually by pointing out the device (not only the folder location) (I also applied http://blogs.6bit.com/josh/2009/05/qualcomm-gobi-wwan-card-on-windows-7/ first).
Install the webtogo one click connection manager...

    BTW:
Is there anyone who can change the looks of this software (or tell me how to do it with the basic files). It just looks ugly with Win7 (see attached image).

Finding your type of WWAN in Z591U was incredibly simple I don't know why you didn't even try it. Didn't take me 30 seconds.

Type Z591U in google, click the first link that takes you to amazon.com. Almost half way down the page under Networking, Connectivity, & Expansion, on the first line you'll see "integrated Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) technology via optional Sprint Mobile Broadband EV-DO service"

    Hello NHT,

I would like to replace my GTM382 which is installed into my Z790DLX and try the Gobi 2000 ,
I am wondering if you listed driver will work with the Gobi 2000,
    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/ORI....0.6.3_ALL.ZIP

till now I didn't find one Z series with the Gobi2000......
I found all of them with the Gobi UNDP-1.....

only the Vaio P and X have the Gobi 2000 but they have 32bit driver for w7 and I have 64bit W7 and also I don't know if I can use it to my Z.............

    any suggestion?

For those of you struffling to get WWAN working on your Vaio under Windows 7, please refer to this post:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=6112640#post6112640

It explains how I got it all working (including S1+S2 buttons, power management, everything) on my Vaio Z under Windows 7. It appears the method works not only on Vaio Z's but also other Vaio's and under both 32 and 64 bit Windows 7.

The main thing to remember about clean installs is that you need to install all the drivers BEFORE installing the SmartWi app. The SmartWi download info says:

    Link: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VPCZ11FHXXQ&upd_id=5349&os_id=49

I'd also recommend installing the WiFi and Ethernet drivers as well.

I've done a clean install and everything works fine.
