In support of a project I'm doing, I removed and disassembled the LCD.

I'm going to take more pictures before I reassemble it.

The carbon line inside the lid looks HOT.

Thanks for the pictures! Just out of curiosity, what was holding the screen frame to the carbon back plate? Clips? How did you go about to unclip them?

    Jparity,

They are attached with 6 screws, three on each side.

The frame is attached with plastic clips.

    Dio,

    That's part of the fun.

There is room for a third WiFi wire. If you can find a long enough wire, it should work

Hey, Zoinks, could you tell us what the part# of the screen is for 1080p for those of us who have 1600x900, but wish to upgrade in the future?

    @ZoinksS2k,

Is this "signature" model with "glossy" carbon lid?

If so, is there a part # somewhere for that lid? I couldn't get this model in Europe and I'd like to change the lid to the "glossy" carbon fiber, but for ordering we need to figure out the part #

It would be much appreciated :)

    It's the glossy.

Here are the rest of the pics I took during this session. I'll make a dedicated post on the protective film application later.

After doing a bit of reading around, I didn't expect the older Zs to merely have carbon 'sprayed' on existing plastic. I knew that they used recycled CF, but to merely coat it on top of the initial plastic...

Being into classical pianos, that glossy yet rough looking texture has me head over heels. Apart from the finger print issue, I'd consider it any day; it looks surreal...

I think there are two choices of CF for the older Z, the normal CF and PREMIUM CF lids, with the PREMIUM being the highest ranked in the older Z lineup. So far, I think I've seen a matt-brushed CF lid at a store once.

Never seen a premium CF lid on the older Z, but I'm assuming it looks something like Zoinks new Z's lid above...? So I'm guessing the PREMIUM versions are all glossy?

Anyways, after some rummaging around (with the help of Rachel, if she's around), the PREMIUM CF lid for the OLDER Z is about US$220 from Sony's US parts store. Pretty expensive considering it isn't even full CF.
So I'd just be able to fathom how much more expensive the premium CF lid would be for the new Z, being fully CF.

    Actually no.

    There are THREE CF options:

    1. "matte" CF which is non glossy and the coat is sprayed
    2. Premium CF
    3. Glossy premium CF

Difference between #2 and #3 is that glossy CF looks... well... glossier, and the CF "look" is more pronounced especially when illuminated.

Currently you can get #3 only in the U.S. (Signature) and Japan (CTO)

Previously, Sony offered even more CF "designs" in the Japanese market, I ordered my TZ from there and I remember it had bunch of options to choose from.

    ...Hmm...
Guess that explains why I haven't seem any Vaios' CF lids (let alone the older Z) as glossy as Zoinks' new Z (which I assume is the glossy premium CF).

From what I can get from the Japanese VAIO site for the Z93 (which is the last old Z in Japan), there are 7 lid options available. A side-note, it seems Japan only had 4 generations worth of older Zs whereas the rest of the world got 5. Anyways, from what I can understand, there are the following lid styles:
    - Black (assuming the usual, matt plastic)
    - Bordeaux red
    - Premium Carbon (not GLOSSY premium carbon)
    - Tweed-matt style
    - Broken glass (pattern)
    - Dot-matrix
    - Kaleidoscope

I'm guessin one of the above is the so-called 'glossy' CF lid...? And it seems that the Abaresque, Gothic Pattern, Japanese Garden and a few other matt carbon lid designs have disappeared altogther. I'm assuming those were limited editions? Never seen any other generation except the 3rd gen old Zs have them.

    @Psyq321
Would you be able to advise of a USA old Z model that comes with the 'glossy' premium CF, and another with the non-glossy, premium CF lid?
I'm keen on doing some research on the part no.s of each lid replacing my existing plastic matt lid.

As I've posted before in other threads, the CF is coated with a lacquer of some sort. It is very durable and could be extra resin, but I'm not sure.

That's a good thing, considering that the "old" brushed Premium "Carbon Fibre" lid scratched easily, probably because the brushed finish made the surface slightly softer.
I was tempted to varnish my lid, but didn't want to risk picking a lacquer that would react with the plastic.

I think it is one of the numbers shown on the images in post #12. Dunno which
