    Hi guys,

I was wondering if the LED power button on the right side of the laptop could be user modified to change to, let's say blue. Is that possible?

    Thanks,

Since it changes between green and orange, I'm going to say it's not a change in the cover, but the bulb(s) itself. Not sure how complicated it is, need to open up and see... If it involves soldering / desoldering parts of the motherboard, I'm going to stay far, far away :)

They make LEDs that have two actual LEDs inside that are different colours. Unfortunately you're likely dealing with a surface mount LED given that there's not much room in this laptop for a full sized one. If it comes down to that, I wouldn't try it either unless you have some elite soldering skills and the right professional equipment. Either way this is awefully risky and a lot of work just to change the colour of your power button?

Oftentimes these are bi-color LEDs. As you probably know, an LED is a diode meaning current only flows through it in one direction. Bi-color LEDs contain two diodes oppositely oriented.

So when the current flows one way, through the device, it lights up the one LED, when it flows the other way it lights the other LED. It is very likely the type used in the Z11 but no guarantee. It could also just be two separate LEDs.

In any case, you will just have to open the unit up and take a gander at the LED. and then decide for yourself, based on your skill level, whether it's worth it for you.

As far as being surface mount goes. Yes that is likely the case. Usu. it is easier to remove a component like this using two irons. You heat up both sides simultaneously and lift it off. Also, you need good soldering irons (hint, if you paid $20 or $30 for your soldering irons you shouldn't be thinking about doing this yourself.)

Oh alright, so it's most likely not possible unless i'm wanting to replace the LED themselves... Alright then, thanks =p. And yeah, i'm in no rush to risk damaging my Z over a few flashy lights =p (I hope you're reading this Sony! I want choice! =p)

Do you know if it's possible to lower the brightness of the power button via software?

Nah, blue LEDs were so mid aughties. They're too bright and attention catching, and ruin people's night vision.
Producers of TVs, DVD players, receivers and computers have caught flak from users for just this. So they're on the way out, and I'm very glad that the Z doesn't have them. (Although I would be even happier if it was possible to disable the slowly blinking orange LED in sleep mode. I've more than once woken up and wondered whether there was a fire.)
