I have been babying my Z1290 since I received it a few months ago but for some reason the right hand side of the palm rest seems to be loose.

It now has some "give" in it and squeaks slightly when I press my palm on it when typing. Naturally, this is HIGHLY annoying and I have searched the forums here and elsewhere without finding a solution.

Has anyone else experienced this? If not, any idea how I may be able to fix it without sending it back to Sony?

I bought mine last month and mine makes little clicking sound whenever I put my palm down to type on the right side as well.

I think this is a design flaw with VPC Z models.

Only thing I can think of to fix this is by tightening down the screws on the bottom of the notebook.

Maybe we can insert some sort of firm (yet cushy) object between the motherboard and palm rest cover to compensate the space?

I'll likely open the bottom of my Z tomorrow to see if one of the clips below the palm rest has come loose.

what u can do is to apply a sheet of adhesive film between the plastic palm rest and the aluminum base. the noise is generated from the plastic is rubbing the aluminum.

My right hand side of Z12 palm rest also squeaks since I got it.

It only happens the first time I press on it, and it doesn't happen until I let it rest for some time (30+ mins).

It's a design flaw, my Z13 has the same issue and it drives me nuts. I read on this forum that it is not advised to tighten the screws because you will overtighten them and you will see small circle dimples on the exterior from where the screw's pressure points are on the underside of the palmrest.

Some of the comments here are interesting because this issue didn't happen when I first received the laptop.

Is there any guide here on in the Sony documents which shows the proper way to access the underside of the palm rest?

It's odd because on mine, it only creaks occasionally. I'll intentionally press down on that area and sometimes it does and sometimes it does not. It's quite odd and I wish it were just metal and part of the keyboard area instead of a separate piece.

Hmm mines cracked a bit before... then yesterday i opened up my laptop to dust the internals and tighten up the screws on my screen and it's not cracking anymore. Maybe you should try that, or maybe just tighten some screws on the bottom?

Mine has this issue also, I sent it in for repair and got it back just a bit better. I like the design of the "old" Z where the palmrest is not some separate part. I ditched my thinkpad for being so creaky... anyway, I will send it in for repair again as soon as i will not be needing it for a week or so.

I've never opened this computer up and don't know if I want to if I don't really "have" to. Sure it bothers me, but a broken keyboard ribbon would bother me more!

I use a BT keyboard when at home anyway, so it's not the end of the world for me.
