Is it impossible to push a 30" display with this notebook/dock combination? It looks like it only has HDMI which maxes at 1920x1080.

I'm not sure what the display size has to do with the resolution. You should be able to run a jumbotron at 1080p.

Running your LCD at native resolution is fairly important, to some.

Fair enough but at least specify the resolution you want. There is at least one member here with experience in pushing beyond FHD resolutions out of Sony.

1: does your monitor support HDMI @ that resolution ( HDMI 1.3 ) or does it Dual link DVI for that resolution

2: anyone know if this laptop fully supports HDMI 1.3 or 1.4 as you need these later revisions to run @ that resolution.

GPU, even though they say HDMI 1.4 or whatever, are still only clocked fast enough to pump 1200p@60Hz. To go higher res, you have to lower the refresh rate (uses less bandwidth).

EDIT: to be clear, I mean the TDMS clock rate, and it's effect on HDMI bandwidth.

I was afraid of that. the ONLY laptop I could find a year ago that could pump that resolution at a full 60hz was the Elitebooks using the advanced dock.

My M11xR1 and M11xR2 both could do it, but they did so only because Dell wisely chose to put HDMI and Displayport (which, in all of it's forms, supports 2560x1600@60Hz) on the later models, in addition to VGA on the oldest one. Honestly, it confounds me why Sony didn't do so, I mean, even Acer is putting DP ports on their newer laptops. On a lower end product, like the Y series, it's acceptable. But on a laptop ranging around the Z, and comming with an external dock... IMO, it's unacceptable.

EDIT: there is also an old ASUS laptop (C2D era) with a nVidia GPU that had dual link DVI :p
