As everyone knows here, Sony is never too fond of putting in a high end GPU in the VAIO range. The new Z even with an external dock gets a not so powerful AMD 6650 "M". Their all in one range tops out with Nvidia GT 540 "M" and so does the 3D VAIO.
When almost every manufacturer including Apple now have started using high end GPU in their laptops, why does Sony not care at all about the need of a powerful GPU at least in their flagship notebooks ? Is it because they fear it will "cannibalize" their PS3 sales??????![]()
Would love to hear what you guys think about it.

Sony has never been known for gaming laptops, but rather as a manufacturer who makes laptops with good performance in other areas (such as fitting good CPUs) Sony is actually still quite good for the 13" gaming laptop niche (the SA/SB is no doubt, very good for a 13"), but not too true for the larger sized laptops, where almost every laptop will trump Sony's laptops for gaming power. Look at the VAIO F. The 540M in that thing is disgusting.
Sony is taking a very sluggish improvement in GPU power during the recent years. Back in 2010, the introduction of the VPC-Z was revolutionary because the Z is a 13" laptop that packs dual graphic cards, something which NO other laptop in this size had (bar the m11x, maybe). However, other manufacturers have been following this trend and more laptops with switchable graphics are popping up in recent months, making Sony's GPU edge of their laptops less of an advantage or actually, eliminating the advantage entirely. -
VAIO's are aimed at professionals & multimedia users. To have a high-end GPU Sony would have to make a chunky machine to allow adequate cooling. This goes against everything the VAIO brand stands for.
You can game on a VAIO, but if you want cutting edge hardware with trade-offs like increased weight, poor aesthetics and lots of heat then buy another brand.
