Why doesn't Sony have any LED screens on it larger screens? Compared to a MacBook Pro screen, is there a big difference? The MacBook Pro screens are very clear and bright. I was looking at a Sony VGN-FW480J/T. The screen is 1600 X 900. Is this a good screen?

You have an ECO screen. In comparison with its full HD brother (1920x1080), ECO color is pale and its full brightness is equal to full HD at 50%. If you want richer color and brighter screen, get the one with Full HD but then you have to deal with small fonts. There is a workaround but none of the workaround is 100% perfect for all situations.

The best notebook screen in my opinion is FW190 CTO. It comes with HiColor screen at 1600x900. The color and brightness is identical to Full HD but you don't have to deal with the small fonts. Unfortunately, Sony stops offering such screen. They don't offer it anymore. At least not in the US.

How small is small? Is it really so uncomfortable to read standard text (webbrowsing for example) on the full hd screen?

Setting the browser zoom on an HD to 125% will give you about the same size font as at 100% on an ECO -- and it's the easiest solution to the "problem" of smaller fonts. Especially since you may get used to them more quickly than you would think (as Hendra is currently attesting as well).

BTW I do not think it can be said that HiColor is identical to FullHD in color and brightness: A side-by-side of a FW390CTO FullHD and a FW190CTO HiColor showed that the FullHD screen was darker and appeared slightly washed out. The FullHD on its brightest screen setting was equivalent to the HiColor on its second highest.

As for LED screens, only the RGB LEDs can be counted on to actually improve the viewing experience. White LED (actually a blue lamp, I believe, coated with yellow) does not make whites whiter -- in the Dells I have seen, the blue cast of the CCFL screens are no different on their White LED screens. The advantage to LEDs lies elsewhere....
