Legally, they cannot do that unless they can prove that XP damages the laptop...and it does not.

Just make factory restore discs when you first get it. If in the event it runs into hardware issues, put back Vista.

Besides, Sony provides XP Downgrade Discs for some of their models that are pre-equipped with Vista. I doubt they'll use that card (but it wouldn't surprise me!)

Sony even throws you in jail if you go XP.

Actually most company's (HP for one) will not support you over the phone unless the system is with the OS you bought it with. I had downgraded to XP on a HP that came strictly with Vista and they wouldn't help me so I'm assuming if you needed warranty work done they may require you to reghost to factory standard or the work won't be done. I guess its a grey area in cases like the TZ where they have provided XP downgrade discs, but I'm guessing the AR series doesn't have that option.

Long story short... I think you will still have warranty available to you; just have to reinstall the OS before you send it in if it's a hardware issue. Might be hard if its something like the CD drive thats playing up...

actually, there was a lawsuit. I can't find it right away, although will search.

A company cannot require you to have a specific software installed in order to perform warranty repair.

The worst thing that can happen if you mail them a XP box is to wipe it out and restore it with Vista, although most of them will try their 'tools' on XP before wiping it clean.
