Sorry to bring up the spacebar issue once more, but I just wanted to know from those of you who sent your SZ back to sony to get the space bar repaired if sony did actually repair it (so I can bother with sending it back to get repaired.) Thanks

I haven't had the problem so i wouldnt know if it were fixed or not. I got my sz last sunday. So they probably fixed the issue since then.

Thanks ostack! Please do report when you get yours in. Also don't forget to mention how long it took for sony to make the repair and return it to you. I'm afraid I'd miss my SZ if it were gone for tooooooo long.

Well, when you contact them to arrange returning your notebook to them, they will overnite some shipping materials to you. You will in turn, (using the pre-paid label) ship your notebook to them. I ended up shipping mine on a Saturday, and they had it logged into their system by the following Tuesday. Then, it will be "with a technician" for about 6 working days. Count on another 2-3 days to get it shipped back to you, depending on where it has to be shipped to.

In total for me, the process took 2 full weeks. No sense in complaining about it, as it makes no difference in the amount of time you are without a notebook. I traded a few emails with them, but in the end, it made no difference.

I don't know what they do that takes so long to replace a keyboard, but I guess as long as it is done right, I will not complain too much. I'll let you know how it is sometime tomorrow evening.

I have a 3 week old sz160. I tested the spacebar when I got the notebook. It worked well. However, I am starting to notice the spacebar not registering when I tap on the left side.

I hope this problem does not get worst with time.

I have an open complaint with Sony regarding this and two days ago I got a voicemail telling me that a replacement key or keyboard wouldn't fix the problem. The guy said it's a design fault and the engineers are working toward a fix for this.

    Oh dear.

If you tap on the far left or far right of my spacebar (sz140) then it does not register, but in the middle it does. I assume this is the issue? People place there hands and tap keys in different ways. I find if I make sure my thumbs are tapping the middle I dont even notice it!

Unfortunately i'm one of those people who taps closer to the edges of the spacebar. And i'm not about to spend 2k (GBP) on a laptop and change MY typing habbits.

There's a reason the spacebar is that long. If a key doesn't work along its entire length its a problem with the keyboard, not the user.

Ah! That's great news! Sorry to bother you once more but now that I know they'll fix it, what do I do next? I'm guessing call sony support and complain about the space bar and pray they offer to replace it? Also, I have had the laptop for a little over a month, this won't be a problem will it? Thanks so much for your help!

I talked to the tech at the Sony service center, he toldme that so far he had replaced three keyboards on SZ laptop for people complaining about the spacebar missing key-press, he said he didn't make any differences.

It really depends on how you type. for some it will be fine.

I slightly changed the way i type on the space bar now, and it works fine for me

Well, when I called, I was talking with the second level support about a different problem when I mentioned I also had trouble with the space bar not registering a key-press at the far ends of the key. I'm not sure if it matters what level of support you are talking with, but if someone gives you hard time about it, hang up and call back. You may want to just say it does not work at all, as I have read that others have had problems with the Sony reps claiming it is normal for the space bar not to work at the ends, or there is no fix for it. Then, when you send it in for repair, make sure you describe your actual problem on the form they give you. You want them to be able to reproduce your problem. I was well into my second month when I had mine fixed.

Also of note, they replaced the plastic trim on the left side of the case that I had broken (the spot above the memory stick slot). I never mentioned it to them at all. There was also a note that they had to re-image the hard drive because the new keyboard was not recognized by the OS, and the dvd software was corrupted?

I can't complain about the service I received. It took longer than I wanted, but they did take care of my problem, and then some.
