Sony VGN-140E laptop. Sony battery 4800mh. The battery would only charge to 85% max but would last about 3.5 hours at that level, so I figure the battery can't be shot. I discharged it down to 8% (it would not read less that 8% no matter how long I waited) hoping it would calibrate right as it recharged. It got up to about 64% and then started reverse charging! Although it said "plugged in, charging" the percentage dropped instead of going up. When it reached 31%, it suddenly said "fully charged, 100%.
Anybody know what's up? Did it just really need to be discharged and recharged?

Download Cupid Hardware Monitor, install it, run it, and there should be a part of it for your battery. Read off what it says for "Wear Level", and "Full Charge Capacity" (the full charge capacity is the current level the battery is saying it is capable of, wear level is the difference between that and the designed capacity)
How old is the laptop, and has it seen a lot of use? -
could it be the vaio battery care is turned on and set to 85%?
check for battery care turned on in advanced power settings or boot into the bios and check there. -
It has Win 7 64 bit so no Sony Care stuff. Yes it is several years old. I'll check the bios.

Nothing in the bios about the battery.

It appears that there is no available bios flash to remove the Sony battery codes for 64 bit Windows 7 or even Vista. You must have a 32 bit version.
I'm thinking install another hard drive and load 32 bit Windows, flash the bios, and the reinstall the HD with the 64 bit version.
Sony laptop battery crazy
