the metal strip on my cr keeps shocking me when it is plugged in. I know it's because the cr isn't grounded properly, but does anyone know if there is a way to fix it, or get sony to send you a 3 pronged charger, I read something a long while ago, but i can't seem to find it. im just worried that it will screw up my laptop over time
-
You can probably find one something does grounds a two-prong adapter (if they even exist), but honestly the cheapest option may be to buy a three-prong.
-
i really don't want to spend money, i heard of sony sending people the three prong adapter, but it took a lot of complaining because sony trys to deny that there is an issue, as with the sz doing the same thing but in the palmrest. How do you think guys and gals out there think i should go about it getting it, im no good at the whole complaining of the phone thing.
-
hey i think im going to give sony a call tomorrow and see if i can get a 3 prong...i have the same issue, and its really annoying and like other's have mentioned i cannot see it being good for us or the computer.
If i do end up with any success i'll post back. -
If you get them to give you a grounded adapter, let us all know.
-
Call Sony and explain to them!
Sony exchange my 2 pong with a 3 pong a year ago for my SZ.
They will ship you a box with 3 pong and ask you to return the 2 pong. Apprently some people said you can keep the 2 pong, which I wish I do. -
I first e-mailed then was instructed to call
I just got off the phone, and the representative basically told me this is a known issue and they have ordered the 3 prong adapters and will replace customers who request them. Must be under 12 months. Mine is 3 months and they asked me to fax my recipt from Fry's but I do not have that capability or ability to easily access one. So the rep put me on hold and came back to tell me she will have it shipped to my place in 4 days.
I would have been pissed if she had to have me fax. But i guess now i'll have two adapters? haha.
Give sony a call. -
did the 3 prong help? I was one of the first to report the "shocking" ability years ago. They denied it back then.
-
haha just made my call too, and they told me the same thing, they are sending me a new adapter too, i didn't have too much of a problem with the rep, which was a shocker. they didn't ask me to fax anything though, but i did get put on hold several times for 10 minutes or so. now hopefully they actually send it and i don't have to deal with calling back, I'll let you know how well it works, if and when and i get it
-
Good to hear!
Yeah i asked the rep and with tests they figured out that this is a defect in some notebooks but not all. And the reason why they continue to sell with just two prong is because not all of their notebooks exibit this symptom and compatibility with more plugs and plug adapters for extension cords and international travel plug adapters. -

I much prefer the 2-pin plug PSUs since the mains power cable is thinner and lighter. I think the problem is that 3-core cables fall under a different standard which demands much higher power ratings.

Just got my replacement as well -- had to call twice because the first girl I talked to was going to charge me for the replacement
I think laptops should come with two supplies anyway because of the crappy way they're made, i.e. having the skinny break-prone wire attached to the pricey power adapter!
-
im very glad that sony actually recognized the problem instead of trying to bs and deny it
-
Ok so I just got my package in the mail... and it turns out to be just another 2-prong adapter (sans plug-in cord)... after they specifically told me it would be a three-prong adapter. Is this happening to anyone else?
-
i got my replacement today. it looks a lot spiffier than the original one, including a velcro strap to tie up the cord (which was really needed!). but i feel that the cord to the notebook that joins with the ac unit seems thin...we'll see how it plays out.
There's no instructions explicitly saying i have to return the part, but they do give me shipping label and some instructions for a tv return...haha. -
Sony replaced mine under warranty. I had much better luck calling Sony in the morning. I think you get their US call center in the morning.
-
I got mine thursday, 3 days after i called, props to the speed. The new cable is nicer than the original, "spiffier" as nodrogkam described. The shock problem is definately gone. The brick is actually a bit smaller, and it says vaio across it, cute
its got a nice little velcro strap too. Question now is, do i send the original back or not. They included shipping materials, but no directions, i think im just goin to hold on to both for now though.
-
You don't need to send the old two-prong adapter to Sony when you receive the new one, at least that was what my customer rep. said when I asked about it.
-
sounds good, its always nice to have a spare laying around
-
yeah im not going to send mine back...i mean they never told me to over the phone and like i said before, no instructions. moreover, they dont have my billing information so why worry? haha
besides you can always bs that they never sent you materials!
Yes it is cute...least it looks good, unlike the really cheap looking original. i swear sony could make it smaller like HP! But then again their travel one would be unecessary. The travel one would probably shock us too since its only dual prong w/out ground.
Sony laptop is shocking my wrist
