I am a bit confused with the Sony Vaio model line. As in which series is better than which. For example AR>TZ. Can someone list the hierarchy and a brief description as to why one line is better than the other(ex: due to build quality, better screen used etc)? Thanks.

There is no "hierarchy". It's a democracy. The computers are different sizes.

There's also the AR series which isn't LED backlit, but still stunning because its backlit by dual lamps instead of one like in most notebooks. -
VAIOs are not ranked like ThinkPad in a way like T series being generally higher than R series, etc.
According to my hardcopy of VAIO General Catalogue, current series are grouped generally as follows :
VAIO at Home
- AR : This is the top-of-the-line model in the Home series, 17" widescreen
- FZ : This is the mid-range in the Home series, 15.4" widescreen
- NR : This is the entry-level in the Home series, 15.4" widescreen
VAIO on the Move
- SZ : This is the high performance and stamina series best for mobile business executives, 13.3" widescreen
- TZ : This is the high-end "Lifestyle" notebook series with ultra-long battery-life, 11.1" widescreen
- CR : This is the basic "Lifestyle" notebook series aimed at the younger market with its various vibrant colours and rounded appeal, 14.1" widescreen
- UX : The smallest VAIO. This is the UMPC series, 4.5" widescreen
VAIO for Business
- G : This is the light but tough business series with longer battery-life, 12.1" widescreen
VAIO for Living
- LM : Combination TV cum wireless desktop PC, 19" widescreen
- LJ : The "Fusion PC". Combination audio cum portable desktop PC, 15.4" widescreen
- TP : The home entertainment PC to be used in conjuction with high-definition TV. No built-in monitor of its own.
