We bought a sony laptop about 6 months ago, I remember being impressed with its nice 500 Gb Hard Drive. But unfortunately 3 months later the motherboard burnt out and there was no response from the laptop at all. Extremely annoyed but calmly contacted sony and set it off to the sony technical support centre.

It was formatted back to vista and returned. Now about 3 months later I just noticed they didn't format at all they just swapped my hard drive not with an identical one but with one half the size. Now I am really angry, firstly I had to put up with a huge inconvenience of loosing all my data on a laptop that was only 3 months old and secondly they sent back a downgraded machine!

Considering that it's now three months on is there anything I can do?
One thing is for sure I will never buy another sony laptop!

Never heard of this happening before.Did you contact them again? They may have accidently given you the wrong the Hard Drive.I'm sure they wouldn't have done it on purpose.

    Okay, stay calm.

First of all, a lot depends on what warranty you're operating under. Sony computers generally have a one-year warranty, so nine months in is no big deal. And sometimes Sony can even send an onsite tech during the first year if you live within 50 miles of their service contractors for a simple HDD swap.

Secondly, if you had your computer repaired at the Depot in San Diego, well, you received a sheet detailing what was done on the computer. There is a space at the bottom where they write in things BUT there are also boxes that can be checked higher up on the page to indicate a drive was changed. Easy to overlook. Try to locate it because it might save embarassment if you complain and you were indeed notified.

Thirdly, I am assuming you are considering "half the size" to mean not its literal size (since they do come in varying widths, and all) but its GB capacity. That is only one way of evaluating the value of a drive; the speed of the drive is another way -- the higher the rpm speed, generally the more expensive the drive, and, of course SSD drives are generally more expensive than the lower speed drives.

So you just may have a drive that is actually more expensive than the drive it replaced. For example, on an FW, a 200GB 7200rpm drive costs more than a 250GB 5400rpm drive, and so forth down the speed line.

Suggestion: If you are in the United States, just email [email protected] and describe your situation -- because they do listen and help. I know because I tried it!

    Good luck!

what model is it? it was probably 2 250gb hdd in RAID 0. during the reimage process they might have not setup the hdd's in raid. just a quick guess off the top of my head.

Many Sony models (e.g. FW series) have had the 500GB 4200rpm drive. That might correspond to the scenario I described: a more expensive, faster, but smaller drive was installed. The original post spoke only of one drive, not two, as well.

Try [email protected] even if you're not in the States -- they can forward the email to the appropriate service.
