I recently purchased a Sony Vaio SA through sony's website. Recieved it october the 18th, with the core i7 2640m. I specifically waited with ordering this laptop because I read the 2nd generation SA was on their way, and by now I have found out that these models tend to be more silent. I only just found out that the laptop that landed on my doorstep is the first generation SA (the VPCSA2C5E) whilst I had ordered the VPCSA3C5E. Calling Sony's customer service is the first thing I'm going to do monday morning, but do you guys think Sony will allow me to return the laptop and send me a new model? Has this happened to any of the Vaio owners before?

I think a year or two ago someone here got an unexpected upgrade. Although rare, it does happen, and I think Sony will take care of it.

Just doublecheck your receipt to see you did order the SA3 -- there could be a wrong link on sony's site or something during the check out process that unintentionally led you to a SA2. So double check and if that was the case definitely have some screen captures and explain to them the situation.

I don't think that the SA2 shipped with the i7 2640m...the SA3 shipped with those chips.
How do you know yours is a SA2?

For as far as I know the sa2 has a 2620 and the sa3 the new 2640; however, I am very sure I have an VPCSA2C5E with a 2640. It says so on the bottom of the laptop, the box in which it shipped and the sony software on it. Discovered the problem when I went looking for drivers after a format (though I have kept the partition with the original windows 7 with vaio stuff) and I was continuously directed to sa3 drivers through the vaio update software which wouldn't install because it is the sa2. Strange case, isn't it?
