Hey i just picked up an sz340p4, my first sony. Im quite happy with the laptop but the software does not seem up to par compared to my old HP.

Im having a few issues when I am playing games, (counter-strike).

most importantly the laptop freezes whenever I am playing the game and slightly reposition it to a new location, or if i accidentally nudge it

i also always get an error whenever i start the counter strike game, something with the biometric security software its says "Runtime error! Programs: C:\program files\Protector Suite QL\menusw.exe R6025 -pure virtual function call"

The laptop is only 2 weeks old, I havent done much to it, removed all the extra programs, installed rmclock and undervolted the processor, overclocked the gpu (now back to default settings).

I thought it might be the harddrive so i turned up the g-shock protection to high, still get it.

Im not sure how to fix this, thanks.

itchyvi3t stated that no one else reported the freezing issue with a SZ series - I would like to report it. I just picked up a VGNSZ330PB and it wouldn't get more than 3-4 minutes into a virus scan (Norton) before it froze and required a hard shutdown. I went to the VAIO Central utility and disabled HDD protection - so far so good, I will reply again if my problem is not solved. I did not install the fix from the UX series link that outie provided. I wonder if this is why it was an open box item, some people just don't take the time to get support (OK, I admit that's me sometimes). BTW, I would agree that you DID do a lot to the laptop, including some things I'd be scared to do  As for disabling the QL Protector suite, have you tried just uninstalling it from the add-remove programs control panel? I realize this post is a little late, but some people (like me) check old forums anyway.

I've also had a problem with Norton freezing during a virus scan. It could have just been Norton, because ever since I switched to NOD32 all is well.

Looks like I spoke too soon, about 2 minutes after my last post it froze again. Apparently changing the HDD protection setting wasn't enough. Next I tried the previously posted UX patch link but it was no longer there, so I went to the UX updates page and downloaded what seemed to be a very relevant patch, they even mentioned anti-virus software conflicting with the HDD protection. However, the patch would not install on my computer because it wasn't a UX.
Then I noticed the HDD protection was in the Add/Remove programs control panel, so I uninstalled it and rebooted. Yippee, I just completed my first full system scan! The next 2 weeks will tell the whole tale, though, that's how long I have before I can return it and I'm going to use it as much as possible. BTW, I also have a UX180P and haven't had a bit of trouble with it

I've had a SONY SZ laptop for over a year now, and I've had the same problem with Counter Strike. The same exact error, in fact pops up on my screen anytime I try and boot Counterstrike. I assumed that the Integrated graphics card was just not up to the task of running CS, but it appears from reading this thread that it is a bug that has been fixed in the UX line, but SONY has neglected us SZ series laptop owners in not coming up with a fix. :(
