Does anybody know maximum brightness and contrast ratio of Sony VAIO SA display?

What about the horizontal and vertical viewing angles?

On a side note the SA HDMI port only outputs 1600x900 not 1080p.

Just concerning the specs of the intergrated HD3000 there shouldn't be a problem with higher resolution than 1600x900 over HDMI. I will check it as soon as my SA arrives (hopefully today if the postal service is on time).
I can check the values of the display with my spyder3 when it arrives as well.

HDMI outputs just fine to 1080p and all the way to 1920x1200.

Using it at 1920x1080 right now thru hdmi with no problem.

    Hi lazybee,

How did you manage to output to 1920 x 1080? I recently bought a VPCSB190X and anytime I try to output via extended desktop to an external monitor, the image is downscaled with a black border around it. I think there may be something wrong with my graphics card (after d/w Sony Tech Support), so I'm returning it and ordered the VPSA290X in its place, hoping that there are more options to adjust the display options but I would be extremely disappointed if the same thing happens.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or tips you might have. Thanks!

My SB does 1080p, but all I did was plug in the HDMI cord.

My SC also does 1080p, and 1200p via HDMI.

The reason for 1600x900 is if you are doing a desktop image clone, in which case, the resolution will be limited to your device's max resolution.

Likely the issue you had was a setting in either ATI configuration panel or the intel version called Overscan. Often it will be by default, configured incorrectly and you need to change it to a 0% overscan to get the correct resolution.

On another note, you may be correct in thinking something is wrong with the graphics, but I would guess that there is a high likelihood that the issue was the over-scan settings relating to your external monitor.

I'm preferential to the SA purely because of the 'slightly' better screen, I think you will find it miles better than the SB in general.

    Best of luck!

Wondering if I could pick your brains again.

Returned my SB, which was likely a lemon, and received my SA. Connected to my 21.5 in. external via HDMI and same problem occurs at the monitor's native resolution (1920 x 1080) with the black bars around the desktop image when I extend the desktop. Again, when I drag my browser over or a PDF file and maximize the window, it displays at the full resolution. When I make the external my primary monitor, there are no black bars.

Called Sony tech support, who were very unhelpful. Was told that this is a hardware limitation and that the external monitor's resolution cannot be beyond that of the notebook's, which I know is incorrect. They decreased the external monitor's resolution to 1600 x 900 which got rid of the black borders, but of course, the resolution is then crap. Was told that they fixed my problem despite my multiple replies that this is not "fixing the problem".

Have tried looking in the ATI Catlyst Control Center and there is no icon or way for me to select any monitor and find an overscan slider. The Intel graphics card settings is also no help as when when increase the underscan setting to 100%, it automatically resets when I close the program.

I love the hardware but this monitor issue is driving me nuts. Any other suggestions?

"black bars" around you desktop image. Do you mean the background image? Or the entire desktop space possible?

Around the desktop image on the extended desktop on all 4 sides. However, I am able to use the space occupied by the black bars when I maximize windows (e.g. browser, PDFs).

Also, when I make the external monitor the "primary desktop", it is full screen with no black borders.

It's a windows limitation. That way, the background has the PPI as the primary display does.

Display Fusion should work, the free version should have all the features that you need. You can set different images for each screen. It is not embedded in windows, but it works very well.

(And thanks to jeremyshaw as well for pointing out that it's a windows limitation!)
