    Hi everyone,

I can clearly see oblique parallel lines like this \\\\\ on the display of my new Sony Vaio.
The lines are not always visible, mainly in the green or red areas. A good test is the bliss background coming with WinXP, stretched to fill the whole screen.
It looks like "noise" from the TFT which comes and goes, it's especially annoying after you start seeing it.
They can bee seen at about 25-100cm (roughly 1-3 feet).

Not all of my friends could see the lines, just about 4-5 out of 20.

It's present either with the Nvidia card and the Intel card, so it does not look like a driver issue nor specific to the video card.

The latest bios (R0073) according to its info fixed some "noise with Nvidia GPU" but it did not address this issue, I just upgraded the bios but nothing has changed.

Is anyone experiencing the same problem or is it just a problem with my own unit?

I would appreciate negative acknowledgements so I can have my unit replaced/fixed by Sony if it's not a common issue.

    Thanks everyone!!

I haven't noticed that on my SZ1VP. Although I may have not noticed it.

I will try and check, but its heading back to Sony in the morning so may not have time. Sorry.

I have the same thing... I don't see it as a problem, and I see it very rarely.

I am adding a link to some pictures of the screen clearly showing the lines I talk about:

    http://www.ncc1701a.polito.it/oblique_lines/

Be careful though, some pics are in PNG format and over 7MB of size.

I took them with a digital camera and their quality is not great but you can have a clue of what I am talking about.

Can someone be so kind to confirm or deny their existence on other displays/models of the SZ series please?

I would like to figure out if the issue can be sorted out by sending back my Vaio for being fixed or if I would simply get another one with the same defects.

    Thanks in advance!!

    Hello,

after some calls and a few days of wait, I will send my notebook back to Sony for checking.
In the last pics they could probably see the very annoying oblique lines I was talking about.

They said it will take about one week.
I'll post an update when I'll get one.

In the meanwhile, nobody else noticed the lines on their SZ displays?
It would be useful to understand if its a SZ series display defect...

Along with the spacebar key problem, the anomalous battery drain in standby and in hibernate mode, the missing drivers, ecc. ecc. :-(

    Hi everyone,

    just a quick update:

after three whole weeks I had my VAIO shipped back from Sony Europe.
*They say that it is up to their specifications*:
no problem with the display and no problem with the battery draining too much current when in standby either, according to the Sony VAIO-link Europe technical center.

They refused to replace it because they say it's up to spec. (?!?!?!? the specs sure don't mention oblique lines in the display nor battery draining too fast and warming up when in standby!)

I would have never expected such a crappy support from Sony.

I am trying to figure out if I can give it back and buy a laptop from another vendor instead.

Anyway I would love to hear if anybody else noticed oblique lines in their SZ displays, similar to the ones I posted a few messages back.

    Thanks everyone!

    Just a quick update.

Sony called me to send back my notebook and they said they would change for free the display since I was having a bad experience with a top of the line unit.
I sent it back, and after two weeks I called them and the guy I spoke with was on his holydays. The "new" guy said that the technicians reviewed again my unit, that it's perfectly working and they will not change a thing.

Moreover, the standby lasts less than 1 day now, but they say that it's normal for their specifications.

I wasted more than two weeks for nothing. I will never ever buy a Sony again..

I just installed the last BIOS 0083 which should address a video noise issue (again) but nothing has changed, still oblique lines all over the green (but not only) parts of the display.

    Bah...
