    Hi.

My nephew has an Sony vaio f11, he said the fan is running fast and then it shuts off/dies

He dropped it off to see if i could do anything with it, the symptoms are.

Notebook boots up OK, but keyboard does not work or very unresponsive, no stuck keys that i can find, menu items can jump between two options as if key is stuck or something.

It runs for 1min or so then the fan goes full speed then it just dies.

It now does not not boot into windows as it had died in windows it now askeds if i want to boot in safe mode or boot normally, but i cannot select anything as the keyboard is not working.

So i pulled out the hdd, the keyboard still does not work so i cannot get into the bios

I have tried with and without the battery, no difference.

So two problems, keyboard does not respond, looks like stuck key, high speed fan then notebook dies.

Anybody have an idea what is going on.

    Thanks

    John.

You could try an external keyboard.... but that might not change things since it would still be competing with the stuck key. Assuming it is a stuck key, maybe turn it upside down or at different angles and tap all the keys. maybe some food is stuck in the keyboard.

An external keyboard is a good idea i will try that, but a stuck or a faulty keyboard should not cause the fan to go max and then the notebook just dies.

Ok, the external keyboard allows me to get into windows for all of 30 seconds before the tubo fan kicks in and the notebook dies, I tried another psu and the same thing happens.

I need to check the cpu temperature, but the notebook dies before windows boots fully, so i was looking for a dos boot cd that shows the cpu temp but nothing so far.

Hmm, you could try booting a linux cd/usb like lubuntu and see what happens when you start it up.
In a terminal you can type sensors
If sensors is not installed by default, in terminal type: sudo apt-get install lm-sensors , but you need internet to download the package.
If the fan is still fast in linux, I wonder if the laptop got dropped or something?

When the fan runs full speed, do you get a blast of hot air from the fan vent? If you can't feel it from 4" away, you need to clean the air passages. If you can feel it but the air is not HOT, you need to change the thermal paste/grease/pads.

Try a Linux live CD. Boot from it and see what happens. The behaviour you describe could well be due to a virus. If it is fine in linux, it is probably a virus. Try to get rid of the infection before reinstalling Windows. If you can't, and have to reinstall Windows without cleaning, run a thorough scan for viruses as soon as you can - use several antivirus software (trials are fine) - to ensure that the virus is not still lurking about.
