My girlfriend's 2 week old Sony Vaio VGN-FW230J won't charge to 100% with the laptop off and left charging over night.

The charge button goes off while she's asleep and the next morning when the laptop is turned on and sits for about 2-3 min to calibrate the battery, it will read somewhere around 76-78%.

The laptop is set to power saver mode, SD card disabled, wifi enabled and a few other power settings set to help battery life.

Any ideas what is going on? is there a firmware update that will correct this or is some kind of setting off?

The cable is plugged in fully and secure when charging so that's not the case.

    Any ideas?
    please and thank you

look at the Sony Utility designed to minimze battery wear - you can set it to allow only charging up to 80%

You can access it via the Vaio Control Centre.
It called "battery care" (translated from German)
