    Hello all,

New member seeking knowledge to repair my 6month old laptop.

Screen was cracked, but worked fine including backlight.

Didn't take battery out, but turned off power. Plugged in replacement screen purchased and no backlight.

Plugged in old screen and now no backlight.

Afters lots of research, found there is apparently a fuse on the mobo that could be blown.

Problem is I can't identify the specific fuse.

Is there someone who is familiar with this fuse and can direct? I can post photos of the mono if neccessary.

    Thank you for your support,

    Dana

Post a photo around LVDS (LCD Cable) connector both side of the motherboard, I will point out the fuse for you.

    Chris,

Look at your photos, I am not sure if LCD is LED or not since I noticed a inverter connector.
However, I found a fuse on the other side of LVDS connector.
The fuse has label F16. I circled RED in the photo.

I've checked with my meter and theres no continuity measured across this fuse. Researched soldering, flux and alloy material, and purchased the appropriate items.

I can either replace the fuse, or put a blob of alloy bypassing the existing fuse.

I think I'm going to go with the blob.

Will let you guys know what happens.

Thanks for the help and support.

    Dane

Select Ohm Meter and measure the fuse.
If the meter shows 0, fuse is good, otherwise the fuse is blown.
As you said above, the fuse is blown.
Remove the fuse (if you can) and short two pins with a tiny wire.

    Hi,

Cheers for your help buddy. Noticed this and thought it might be but had seen alot of talk about F1, admitidly regarding dells, so I was searching for that.

Going to join it over the next few days. Any idea what might happen if the screen cracks again and if this isn't fused?

    Regards

    Chris

The fuse is there to prevent LED backlight from damaged if over current.
Inverter is used to drive CRT Backlight so LED LCD doesn't need inverter.
If your LED LCD failed backlight, 99.9% the fuse is blown.

    *Update

    Gentleman,

I've bridged the fuse and the backlight is now working.

Thank you very much Ngvuanh for your support, knowledge and interest, and as well to the other individual who posted the photo of the motherboard.

I purchased a $30.00 Soldering Pen, a $10.00 electronics flux and silver kit. Watched a few videos on You Tube to understand and learn how to solder. I read another post on this forum which explained the technic of bridging the fuse.

The computer is now back to normal. Sony wanted almost $1,000.00 to repair this cracked screen, and now it has been done for under $200.00!

    Thank you

    Dana

I tested the fuse and it is indeed dud. Removed it, soldered a bridge and it now works perfectly.

    Many thanks for your help!!

How do you access to the F16 without taking the motherboard apart (can it be accessed by taking the keyboard out)?.

My laptop screen shows greyish black display and a line on top (a picture of my display background with colour). Not sure if this is a backlight problem or a blown out fuse too.

Now everything is working except there is a problem with my sound device. I cannot turn the volume up past one bar (at one bar still no sound). Just to let you know that I plugged in the speaker wire (I don't think there is any loose wire at the end of the plug caused by pulling and tucking while reassembling).

Could it be the keyboard connection that is causing this problem? Because the "Shift" key doesn't work. I tried plugging and unplugging many times now. I connect the keyboard cable from the bottom side because I couldn't pry the keyboard out (I broke one of the side keyboard clip and afraid to try again). If you know any tricks or video on how to remove this keyboard model please let me know.

    Any advices? Thanks again.

    I have a SONY VPCEB37FD
Took my mobo apart to test the F16 fuse. The fuse is good so this means that my LCD screen is busted. I put the mobo back together, connect it to enternal monitor then turned my laptop on and it says that I have no audio device. So I reassemble the mobo again but this time there is no picture/connected when I connect it to an external monitor. I put my busted LCD screen and it shows lights and shapes (like before). Does this mean my mobo is broken or I just need a new screen inorder to enable the external monitor connection? Could someone please help me. Thanks

You need reseat the black flat cable underneath hard drive location.
You might forgot connect it at motherboard end.

Hello, i know im posting on a old topic but this thread has helped me save my Sony!, so i thought i will sign up and share my experience

I have a Sony PCG-71611W aka VPCCB its a 15.5" Bright orange machine.

The Screen accidentally got cracked, so i went to the simple task of installing a replacement, took out the old screen, installed the new one and nothing black..

So i swapped back to the cracked panel, i had backlight, turned off and swapped back and there was nothing, Back to the cracked and also nothing...

After a month of trying to figure it out, i think wait there might be a Fuse, this was when i discovered this thread for a similar machine.

The Fuse i bridged was F15 (also was green with a N on it) this was located under the LED Connect on the bottem. After this was bridged with solder (god knows if it would be possible to install a new fuse)

But after this was done the New LG Panel that i installed is now running great!

Thanks guys for the discussion and also the pictures

    Bye!

I tried to reseat the flat FFC cable many times now but still no sound. It's unlikely that the cable is not connected to the mobo end because when I plug in a USB it worked; the flat cable connects the Audio Board (which has the USB port) to the mobo. If the flat cable is not connected to the mobo then there shouldn't be any power or connection for the USB to work when plugged in.

I found a breakage (flat metal) in the flat FFC cable. Is it because of the breakage that is why the cable is not fully functional??? Can someone help. Thanks.

I have a VPCEB44FX and believe I blew the LED/Backlight Fuse also. I know this thread is very old, but the original motherboard photos of the VPCEB are not longer displayed. Can someone with knowledge of the fuse location and name please post this information.

    Thanks,

    Mike
